“Gun Ownership is a Dangerous Part of the American Identity” Gary Younge’s article “Gun Ownership is a Dangerous Part of the American Identity”, states the main source of the country’s gun complications stems from our unbelievable sense of pride, of self-power, freedom, and masculinity. Gun-related deaths are on the rise because of suicide, mass shootings involving drug and gang violence on the streets or in schools, accidental shootings caused by ignorant young children with irresponsible parents in charge, along with various other situations which result in death by a gun. People who have a gun in the house are far more likely to be shot dead than those who don’t.” Younge continues to state, “If guns really made you safer, America would be one of the safest places in the world,” and I fathom this idea to be true, but we place guns in the hands of the unstable or unfit to own a gun because of the lenient gun restrictions we have which then, in turn, gives us our problems with unlawful shootings and unnecessary deaths. Although the NRA wins and blocks votes in Congress, the majority of America continues to keep their head straight and in the right mind to “. . . believe gun laws should be more strict, that it’s too easy to buy a gun and that if more people carried guns America would be less safe.” Smaller organizations that promote gun control aren’t as successful as the NRA because they appeal to people that support guns and those that are moderate about guns which gives them power through numbers. The NRA’s role is expressed to the point that we believe they have total control of guns and gun laws, when in fact that’s false. Citizens have control because we’re built from the bottom up and if we truly believe America would be safer without guns, we would fight and put all our effort into making our home country safe once again. Citizen power is a necessity, we need to take control of our power and use it to our full advantage to stop the gun crisis that is taking over
