Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance

What is grit? Grit is passion and perseverance for long term goals. Angela Duckworth, the CEO and Founder of Character Lab, believes that people can be successful if they have enough desire and determination. In her book, Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance, she states that, “I know that grit is mutable, not fixed, and I have insights from research about how to grow it.” Is her statement valid? Yes, if a person puts in hard work and has enough desire, he/she can achieve anything. The more you work hard to achieve your goal, the better the outcome.

She found that adults who had more grit were those that went for their PhD, JD, and MD. These two studies prove that everyone can be successful if they apply themselves. From personal experience; I have found that if you don’t work hard to reach for your goal, you will not get that goal. For example, in high school, if you don’t do the homework each year, you have a lower chance of getting a good GPA and graduating. My brother dropped out of high school sophomore year. He did not have enough determination to get through to graduation. He did not work hard to achieve those goals. You can not expect to get everything handed to you without working for it. That isn’t how life works. You work hard for what you want in life. I believe anyone can reach their goals whether it just be getting a new car, or getting a master’s degree, if you work for it. At the end of the day, what means more: working hard and reaching that goal or getting it handed to you and not working for
