Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance
What is grit? Grit is passion and perseverance for long term goals. Angela Duckworth, the CEO and Founder of Character Lab, believes that people can be successful if they have enough desire and determination. In her book, Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance, she states that, “I know that grit is mutable, not fixed, and I have insights from research about how to grow it.” Is her statement valid? Yes, if a person puts in hard work and has enough desire, he/she can achieve anything. The more you work hard to achieve your goal, the better the outcome.

She found that adults who had more grit were those that went for their PhD, JD, and MD. These two studies prove that everyone can be successful if they apply themselves. From personal experience; I have found that if you don’t work hard to reach for your goal, you will not get that goal. For example, in high school, if you don’t do the homework each year, you have a lower chance of getting a good GPA and graduating. My brother dropped out of high school sophomore year. He did not have enough determination to get through to graduation. He did not work hard to achieve those goals. You can not expect to get everything handed to you without working for it. That isn’t how life works. You work hard for what you want in life. I believe anyone can reach their goals whether it just be getting a new car, or getting a master’s degree, if you work for it. At the end of the day, what means more: working hard and reaching that goal or getting it handed to you and not working for
In this article Emily Hanford is taking information from Angela Duckworth’s findings on the research of ‘grit’. Hanford quotes Angela Duckworth definition of ‘grit’ as , “‘sticking with things over the very long term until you master them.’” (qtd. in E. Hanford 1). Hanford also quotes Duckworth’s article to then explain that the, “‘ gritty individual approaches achievement as a marathon; his or her advantage is stamina.’” (qtd. in E. Hanford 1). Hanford is thus explaining that grit is like perseverance; that a person who works hard can achieve as much as a person who has intelligence. I think people who didn’t get much schooling didn’t mean they are not intelligence. Intelligence can’t use to measure a person schooling. In the old generation, parents don’t have much money to support all their child’s go to college because of the tuition fee and they had a lot things need to support. For example, my parents didn’t go to school, doesn’t mean they are not intelligence or not smart, their family can’t give them that much tuition fee and not much money to let them go to college, however now they still have a job to work on and keeping it. However people don’t go to college doesn’t mean they can’t get a job or can’t survive. So I agree with the author, intelligence can’t use to measure a person schooling. Also I believe that can’t go to college doesn’t mean you can’t get success in other way. The god is fair for you close a door at the same time will open another door for you but you need to be confident.
As mentioned before, he based all of his facts off of his own opinions. Dale uses only 2 pieces of statistical evidence to backup his claim. If this assumption were to become something that everyone believed, people would not get the education they would need to have a successful career life. A lot of people would become jobless because all the low level jobs would not need anymore employees. The higher up jobs would be lacking in business because no one would meet the requirements to work for the companies. Reviewing the article, Dale forgets to point out that a lot of people that go to college become successful. Yes, college isn’t right for everyone, but most of the time, the only way for people to have a successful lifestyle is to go to college.

Success in life is related to the achievement of individual goals, short and long term. Success has historically been related to the measurable cognitive functions such as IQ and talent. However in more modern time’s there has been a shift towards the idea that developmental non-cognitive factors, such as grit and self-control, may have an impact on the level of success that an individual achieves. Non-cognitive factors such as grit and self-control are somewhat related but also distinct from one another, they may have an important connection to levels of success throughout the stages of life from childhood to adulthood.
This makes the paper very ineffective because to parents and other adults, these facts would not apply to them. His article has the potential to become much more effective if he also targets parents, teachers, and counselors because those adults are major influences in a student’s life. I cannot help but believe that there are some very valid points to Professor X’s article, for example, when he states that some students are simply unfit for the academic level that college requires. The author states, “Everyone wants to triumph. But not everyone can-in fact, most can’t.” (X, par. 47) In other words, Professor X believes that some students desperately want to succeed, however, they are unable to do so regardless of the amount of help offered. Sometimes, no matter how many people are set up for success there is not anything else that can be done, but letting them down gracefully. Duckworth believe’s "Cadets who scored a standard deviation higher than average on the Grit–Scale were 99% more likely to complete summer training," however Crede proves that this claim is barely of importance by comparing the gritty cadets to the cadets in general. There are many crucial elements college students must have in order to obtain success. The most valuable aspect of self-improvement for a college student to have starts with grit. Grit can be obtained through keeping one’s goals in mind, sticking to a schedule, and staying resilient to animosity. Grit is defined as using perseverance and passion for the goals one has. Someone with grit has courage, resolve and a strong character. Try to picture a person clenching their teeth while faced with a difficult tack, yet they conquer it anyway.
Parenting styles is a topic that is constantly debated, with many wondering “Am I raising my child in the best way?” In Chapter 10 of Grit Angela Duckworth explores the most common theories on “parenting for grit.” The first theory suggests that many believe grit to be formed only when trouble comes one’s way. Duckworth’s alternative theory follows the words of Nietzsche: “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” Duckworth then paints this way of “tough love” parenting as a means to teach one’s children perseverance. If you start work at mcdonalds and suddenly demand higher pay, chances are no one is going to follow you. They will probably just fire you and get another person willing to do the job. Barbara’s story about her experience was truly shocking. I thought that people who work hard can succeed, but she showed that even if you work hard, sometimes you still need help from the government.
Academic excellence is thought to be a very high-prioritized achievement in today’s society, and in order to reach many goals of success knowledge is the key. Although knowledge is very helpful, without grit you will never achieve great things.
I believe that hard work is the real treasure of a person because without hard work we cannot achieve our dreams and goals in life. No one can achieve success without doing hard work.
