Grief during a War I was captivated after reading “War” by Luigi Pirandello, the title is deceiving to the actual plot of the poem. I predicted that “War” was going to be a story about soldiers in a war, however it was ironic that the actual story was about parents dealing with their sorrows and fear for their children in the war. It puts into perspective the sacrifices that individuals make and the effects it has on their families. “War” is set during World War I and opens as a couple boards a night express in Rome. The demeanor of the passengers on the train are gloomy, with people puffing and moaning. However, after reading the poem over again, I was lead to grief. I believe the point of view, which is the parents of the soldiers is the key factor on why the central idea for “War” is about grief. In “War”, the father that lost his child, explains to the other parents that their children at their current age are doing their duty and for their love of their nation. Yet, once he comes to terms with the passing of his son, he grieves by sobbing uncontrollably. The following quote supports the central idea, after the woman on the train asks if his son is really dead the man reacts “His face contracted, became horribly distorted, then he snatched in haste a handkerchief from his pocket and, to the amazement of everyone, broke into harrowing, heart-breaking, uncontrollable sobs”. Another example of grief in this story is when the woman on the train doesn’t respond to her husband asking how she is doing, the woman reacts per the following quote, “The wife, instead of answering, pulled up her collar again to her eyes, so as to hide her face.” I believe this woman has been grieving that her son is going to be sent to the front of the line for a period. Owen's poem, 'Anthem for Doomed Youth' is more appealing to me because it deals with two contrasting realities of war. His first stanza highlights the wastefulness of war (deaths of young soldiers) while the second stanza, the mourning for the dead. His sarcastic and later quiet tone reinforce the stark contrast between the different aspects of war.
One summer I awoke to the chirping of my cell phone. I was really confused because I had a bunch of notifications. On a normal day I usually only have a couple. When I checked to see what they were, I discovered that they were all concerning my best friend. They all said “I’m so sorry for what happened.” I got really confused and stumbled down the stairs to talk to my mom. When I saw her, she had tears running down her face and she said “He’s gone.” My emotions hit me like a runaway train and I immediately went into a depression. The grieving process had just started and it was awful. Eventually, I knew it was necessary in order to heal. Grief marks our memories with sadness and pain; however, this way of coping is the essential key to moving on with our lives.

Since July 2009, my personal life consisted of taking care of my ill husband. My husband was my best friend and we did everything together. Last year when he passed a huge gap was left in my life. Besides dealing with my grief, I am working to build a life without him. However, I am relying on God to guide me through the grief and help me rebuild my life. The fact that one side is praying for disaster to come on their enemies isn’t showing God’s love and at the end of the poem it says, “We ask it, in the spirit of love, of Him Who is the Source of Love.” It is out of love for their own soldiers but not for the soldiers on the other side. This poem shows the real aspects of people’s feelings about war. Many people don’t want their own side to be crushed, but they don’t care if the other side does get crushed.
The simple definition of war is a state of armed competition, conflict, or hostility between different nations or groups; however war differs drastically in the eyes of naive children or experienced soldiers. Whether one is a young boy or a soldier, war is never as easy to understand as the definition. comprehend. There will inevitably be an event or circumstance where one is befuddled by the horror of war. For a young boy, it may occur when war first breaks out in his country, such as in “Song of Becoming.” Yet, in “Dulce et Decorum Est” it took a man dying in front of a soldier's face for the soldier to realize how awful war truly is. Both “Song of Becoming” and “Dulce et Decorum Est” are poems about people experiencing the monstrosity of war for the first time. One is told from the perspective of young boys who were stripped of their joyful innocence and forced to experience war first hand. The other is from the perspective of a soldier, reflecting on the death of one of his fellow soldiers and realizing that there is nothing he can do to save him. While “Song of Becoming” and “Dulce et Decorum Est” both focus on the theme of the loss of innocence, “Song of Becoming” illustrates how war affects the lives of young boys, whereas “Dulce et Decorum Est” depicts the affect on an experienced soldier.
The phrasing of this poem can be analyzed on many levels. Holistically, the poem moves the father through three types of emotions. More specifically, the first lines of the poem depict the father s deep sadness toward the death of his son. The line Farewell, thou child of my right hand, and joy creates a mental picture in my mind (Line 1). I see the father standing over the coffin in his blackest of outfits with sunglasses shading his eyes from the sun because even the sun is too bright for his day of mourning. The most beautiful scarlet rose from his garden is gripped tightly in his right hand as tears cascade down his face and strike the earth with a splash that echoes like a scream in a cave, piercing the ears of those gathered there to mourn the death of his son.
War photographer is a particularly powerful poem which conveys a sense of suffering as it sympathises with both the photographer and the person in need. Suffering is the main theme of the poem and it depicts an anonymous character going through the struggle between two completely different worlds, documenting the lives of those who are suffering but for completely different reasons. The poem does not just depict the two contrasting worlds but the two contrasting meanings of suffering. Is suffering through your own visually impacted hardship or the suffering of those in desperate need of our help.
