Grief during a War I was captivated after reading “War” by Luigi Pirandello, the title is deceiving to the actual plot of the poem. I predicted that “War” was going to be a story about soldiers in a war, however it was ironic that the actual story was about parents dealing with their sorrows and fear for their children in the war. It puts into perspective the sacrifices that individuals make and the effects it has on their families. “War” is set during World War I and opens as a couple boards a night express in Rome. The demeanor of the passengers on the train are gloomy, with people puffing and moaning. The couple take their seats, its clear that the wife is distraught as she doesn’t answer her husband when he asks if she is alright. …show more content…

However, after reading the poem over again, I was lead to grief. I believe the point of view, which is the parents of the soldiers is the key factor on why the central idea for “War” is about grief. In “War”, the father that lost his child, explains to the other parents that their children at their current age are doing their duty and for their love of their nation. Yet, once he comes to terms with the passing of his son, he grieves by sobbing uncontrollably. The following quote supports the central idea, after the woman on the train asks if his son is really dead the man reacts “His face contracted, became horribly distorted, then he snatched in haste a handkerchief from his pocket and, to the amazement of everyone, broke into harrowing, heart-breaking, uncontrollable sobs”. Another example of grief in this story is when the woman on the train doesn’t respond to her husband asking how she is doing, the woman reacts per the following quote, “The wife, instead of answering, pulled up her collar again to her eyes, so as to hide her face.” I believe this woman has been grieving that her son is going to be sent to the front of the line for a period.
