Throughout history there have been many great civilizations however recording all the history of each civilization is a difficult task. Such a task is usually assigned to a scribe, historian or record keeper. Herodotus is a famous Greek historian who kept such records of many events and civilizations. In particular he studied the Greek, Persian, Egyptian, and German culture and traditions. Due to the records and stories he wrote, we now are able to piece together what other civilizations appeared as through the eyes of a greek scholar.
The Persians were a religious society however, they had no human symbol to represent their gods. In fact it was considered foolish to relate gods to human nature as they were viewed as omnipotent beings instead. The Persian offered sacrifices to their gods using a very unique and specific ritual. The Persians also had a very unique custom regarding greeting others in the street based on social status. The Greeks unlike the Persians nor the Egyptians allowed civilians to participate in the political sphere. This was perhaps the most distinctive feature about Greek civilization compared to the others. Additionally, the population of the Greek empire was around three million which is a small fraction of the Persian empire. The entire population of the Greek empire was situated on a series of islands unlike the other civilizations. However, like the Persians and Egyptians the Greeks were an a very expansive civilization. Herodotus perhaps focused on these issues when comparing the Greeks to others due to a genuine interest in exploring other cultures. The Greeks much like the Egyptians were interested in other peoples’ cultures and traditions.
