To begin, the musical I went to watch was a high school version of the musical Grease. In the beginning, the male lead, Danny Zuko, meets a girl on the beach. At school, he tells his friends about her and how she doesn't live anywhere close to them. Little does he know that the girl, Sandy, recently moved and now attends his high school. Sandy (the lead female character) becomes friends with a bunch of popular girls, known as the “Pink Ladies”. When the "Pink Ladies" introduce Sandy to Danny at the football team’s pep rally; Danny acts rudely towards Sandy. Eventually, he pays attention to Sandy and decides to act like a jock after seeing Sandy hanging out with one. After joining the school’s track team, he ends up in Sandy’s good graces again. The characters in the musical were believable because everyone’s attitude and gestures matched with that of the time period. For example, the greasers had a nasty attitude as they acted, which helped make their characters seem believable. They also spoke with a typical greaser's dialect during the old fashion time period that the play takes place in. Likewise, the girls spoke outstandingly “girly”. Each time they said anything, the spoke high pitched and used exaggerated gestures. One of the main cheerleaders named Patty would constantly flirt with Danny in a super peppy mannerism. Throughout the play, she was always shrieking showing off her positive attitude. Correspondingly, the outcast/ nerdy students acted awkwardly and specific to their characters. They spoke solemnly when saying their lines which added onto the idea of constant rejection. These acting techniques helped to make the musical entertaining as well as bring the characters to
