The 5 Golden Rules of Leadership In today’s society everybody wants to become the next leader, but do people really know what the qualities of a great leader are? There are many definitions and theories about what constitutes a great leader. Some say that a leader is someone who is capable of inspiring and motivating others to change. Other says a leader is someone who does not rely on their title or power to lead, but instead can use his/her personal power to guide and lead others in an effective manner. While the definition of a great leader can vary depending on whom the question is asked, there is no doubt that these definitions have some common ground. This type of leader relies on his/her power in order to dominate and control others. Through power this type of leader engages in a virtual dictatorship where there is little acknowledgement of the efforts of subordinates. One great example of an autocratic leader is Hitler. Hitler dominated through power and fear; “Hitler believed that his decisions were always right and that nobody could have better knowledge about something than he held (Hitler info site).” His authority over his subordinates was clear. He has set roles for individuals and everyone was well aware of what their responsibility was. Although many consider Hitler as a great leader because he was able to influence many people with his charismatic personality, his autocratic style was flawed. Unfortunately an autocratic leader is only able to exert fear into his subordinates and not respect. This type of leader does not inspire others to change; he forces them, and the change does not result in a long term change. Autocratic leaders are wrong because they cannot solemnly rely on power and force to get the result they want. Only a democratic leader can fit the definition give by Ken Blanchard, he said that in the past a leader was a boss. Today's leaders must be partners with their people; they no longer can lead solely based on positional power, but through example. This definition clearly reflects what a democratic leader does.
