There are many definitions and theories about what constitutes a great leader. Some say that a leader is someone who is capable of inspiring and motivating others to change. Other says a leader is someone who does not rely on their title or power to lead, but instead can use his/her personal power to guide and lead others in an effective manner. This type of leader relies on his/her power in order to dominate and control others. Through power this type of leader engages in a virtual dictatorship where there is little acknowledgement of the efforts of subordinates. One great example of an autocratic leader is Hitler. Hitler dominated through power and fear; “Hitler believed that his decisions were always right and that nobody could have better knowledge about something than he held (Hitler info site).” His authority over his subordinates was clear. He has set roles for individuals and everyone was well aware of what their responsibility was. Although many consider Hitler as a great leader because he was able to influence many people with his charismatic personality, his autocratic style was flawed. Unfortunately an autocratic leader is only able to exert fear into his subordinates and not respect. This type of leader does not inspire others to change; he forces them, and the change does not result in a long term change. Autocratic leaders are wrong because they cannot solemnly rely on power and force to get the result they want. Only a democratic leader can fit the definition give by Ken Blanchard, he said that in the past a leader was a boss. Today's leaders must be partners with their people; they no longer can lead solely based on positional power, but through example. This definition clearly reflects what a democratic leader does. Leadership is a quality which cannot be acquired by any person from the other but it can be acquired by self-determination of a person. Leadership can best be called the personality of the very highest ability-whether in ruling, thinking, imagining, innovation, warring, or religious influencing. Leadership is practiced not so much in words a it is in attitude and in actions. Their actions leave a long lasting memory in the line of history and lead up to may events that occur today. To be a leader one will need many qualities. Leaders have a purpose and strategies to accomplish that purpose. They are driven and motivated. In the end they should be able to attain good results. These innate talents help to make up a leader that will succeed and be efficient in carrying out tasks. But, the purpose of this paper is determine what truly makes a leader successful. A successful leader should be considered more on their impact rather than their accomplishments of their organizations alone for they are not sufficient in determining the key to their success .
The role of a leader is often inaccurately defined as an individual who is in a position to give orders. However, there are enormous differences in the attributes of an outstanding leader, and one of mediocrity. An outstanding leader, above all else, is a role model for their peers. In doing so, a leader of the highest caliber is trustworthy in both their peer’s trust for the leader as well as the leader’s trust of their peers. A leader must also display exceptional skill in communication which transcends speaking and, more importantly, includes listening and consideration to the ideas presented to them. One may wonder exactly what it is that qualities a strong leader possesses. A strong leader is determined, and strong willed. They must be of good judgment, and without bias. They cannot easily be persuaded, and they are firm, yet at the same time, a good lead must also empathize with his subordinates, and have the best interest at heart for said subordinates, at all times. However, with that being said, a good leader cannot be afraid to discipline his subordinates when necessary. Unmistakably, being a leader is a very difficult feat – one which not everyone can accomplish. A leader must be an authority, a friend and a counsellor, all at once. They must be responsible, and always take into account the disadvantages of a situation. Not everyone is suitable to be a leader, whereas, just about anybody can be a good role model.
Leaders is an effective tool for summarizing and inspiring leadership, not in that it teaches tough strategies and manipulations, but that when looking at an overview of its content, Bennis and Nanus are essentially teaching human relations and human decency. All in all, this book highlights strategies for us all to be better in our lives and our everyday interactions.
In order for a leader to be a leader he/she must begin with the assumption that you are the one who matters most. As a leader you have to possess that level of confidence in yourself that you are capable of leading yourself “before you can lead others”. And when you develop this belief then you are better able of affirmative influence “on others”.
Although there are many outstanding, albeit necessary qualities of a good leader, it is the leader’s beliefs in which greatness is given its first breath, fostered by action, and spread throughout the institution. A great leader believes in encouraging, not destroying; in setting the precedence instead of yielding to prominence ; in collaboration, not division; in giving, not taking; and in having high standards and volunteering to be the first of many to be held to them. A great leader does not take advantage of the people being lead, but instead, creates an advantage for the people by giving them the opportunities to lead. Only when people take ownership of an institution will passion be cultivated, action be taken, and greatness be achieved.

Finding a great leader is to find a leader who can find a balance in the order things. To be able motivate, to inspire, and foster a purpose and belief within each individual based on what the leader believes and the willing for each individual to take action based on the inspiration. To be an effective leader, the leader must inspire a each individual he or she intends to lead, in order to inspire and reach the full potential of an effective leader, the leader must realize and practice the concept of the three rings, “The Why”, “The How” and “The What” of the “Golden Circle”.
Many Scholars characterize the core qualities and skills necessary for an effective leader. Useem defines leadership as “Creating a vision and translating that vision into actions”. Historically, an effective leader was assumed to be exceptionally knowledgeable, authoritative, and dominate. Those leaders applied the command and control method to lead an organization. With the passage of time, this definition has been changed. The modern definition of an effective leader is honest, courageous, trustworthy, inspirational, and result-oriented. Today’s leaders create shared values and vision, and empower others to achieve their targets.
There is no one true definition to leadership, although, Webster's Dictionary defines leadership as "the power or ability to lead other people”. I truly believe to each is his own. It is my opinion that leadership consist of various skills that are learned over time and mastered through experience. Leadership comes with hard work, commitment, the ability to view multiple perspectives along with the willingness to accept failure but also the perseverance to carry on. My personal philosophy of leadership has developed, matured and expanded from situations where I learned from other leaders I’ve had the pleasure of working with, and situations that have arose in my home life.
Leadership is an important part of society, we must have leaders within our society in order for it to function, as teachers we are expected daily to be leaders to our students, their parents, and even the teachers around us. Some believe that leadership is a learned trait and others believe it’s a trait that we are born with, but the way that we see leadership should be multidimensional, with different levels and different approaches. For me leadership is based on the persons traits, skills, the ability to be authentic and the ability to be a servant while leading always thinking about others. Which all bring me to the four theories that I connect with the trait approach, skills approach, authentic and servant leadership theories. If developed and learned how to use correctly, these are what take leaders to the next level and accomplish great things. In the following paper I will talk about leadership in our ever-changing world, explore my leadership practices, values and strengths as well as elaborate on the goals I have made to challenge myself as a leader.
Leaders of the future will be faced with many challenges. As the world changes, we must adapt the ways in which we face these challenges, and in turn grow as leaders. A leader is not merely someone which commands a group or organization. A good leader exhibits the ability to take an average team of individuals and achieve greatness. Leadership is not supervision or leading. It is the ability to inspire or influence others towards the end goal. As Barendsen and Gardner stated (2006), “the best leaders are individuals who, in their work, exhibit three distinct meanings of good: (1) an excellent technical and professional quality and competence, (2) an ethical orientation, and (3) a completely engaged sense of fulfillment and meaningfulness” (p. 266).
