The movie "Girl Rising" consists of nine short stories of nine different girls from nine different countries. Each has their own life to live and a story to tell. The movie portrays girls' rights and their ability to rise above their unfortunate fate. Sokha, known as the "child of the dump," lives in Cambodia with no family or relatives. She is an orphan. Her home is the dump. She has always yearned for a chance to go to school. She wanted to know what the alphabet sounds like coming out of her mouth. She wanted to wear a school uniform. That was her one dream-- to have an education. Sokha's determination to wear a school uniform eventually became a reality. In the next story, Wadley, a bright kid loves to study and loves the scenery of a green garden with wild flowers. She was brave and strong like her mom. During this time, there was a war going on between Haiti and France; Haiti was trying to win their independence. Unfortunately, war fell upon them and left Haiti in a complete disaster; there were no more wild flowers. Wadley was no longer able to go to school. With no money, she was still determined to go school. The teacher told her to go home and kicked her out countless time, but she never gave up and came back the following day. Even though they are not as fortunate as us, they never gave up on having a better future. They were determined to fight for what they want and need. One of the most recurring theme was education. The statistic (in the movie) shows that if there are more girls in school, there would be less cases of HIV among them. What I found hopeful and uplifting was that the girls were so determined and persistent towards feminism and education rights. It inspires and motivates me to want to do something with my life, because I see now how fortunate I am to have a secured
