Gender Inequality In Antigone Essay

Antigone points out many things , however one of the main things that it points out is how bad gender inequality is back in the old day. It shows many examples of how many societies were run back then. It proves to me how women and men were portrayed in the Greece society, are the equal or different, what gender expectations do they follow or fight against?
In the book Antigone she has a sister named Ismene and after she explains to Ismene her plan to bury her brother because she believes in the upper gods and what they set as the rules is what they should follow. However, her sister believes otherwise , she thinks that she can not stand up for what she believes in because she is a women. They were definitely not. Men were absolutely disgusted at the thought of women being equal with them. In the play Antigone Creon was absolutely set that he would not be ruled by a woman or deterred by a woman as long as he was alive and king. Even though Antigone was his own family he sentenced her to death because she stood up for what she believed in. She believed and the uppers gods believed no one shall go unburied or that is considered disrespectful. If it was a man that broke the rule that Antigone did the man would have been punished but not as severely as Antigone. In line 759 it states “Better to fall from power, if fall we must , at the hands of a men- never be rated inferior to a woman never.” Women in the Asociety hated this they wanted to be treated equally but since they were considered weak and not important their opinions did not matter. So back then they were not equal.
Both genders actually fought against gender expectations. Most women were actually very smart , and had very good ideas that would have been beneficial if the men would have just listened , but back then women were considered unimportant so therefore what they said was not important. Although men had to stand up against the fact they were considered strong and very important. So they could not mess up big decisions, or it would be a very bad situation. Women fought to prove to people and the law that they were actually smart and they should be considered smart. Women
