Historically black gay males face intersecting forms of oppression. This oppression comes from all of society, but it also comes from within the black community. Some reasons for this could be the strong history of religion within the black community and the associations between identify as gay and femininity. This can amplify the struggles of those individuals because it leaves them feeling as if they do not have any solid foundation to lean on. This is problematic because those who fall into more than one minority group face oppressions from all of society, therefore having the support of your community can help individuals stay strong.
