“Feet, what do I need them for if I have wings to fly?” is a quote from the artistic, yet eccentric Frida Kahlo. With her unique character, Kahlo was an iconic Mexican artist and is known for shaping Latinx art today. She grew to be an emotionally driven rule breaker who took her life stories and events and turned them into mesmerizing art. She took painful experiences from her life and encapsulated them into beautiful paintings. Just as Kahlo was inspired to create art from her own life, many others have used her artistic methods and learned to incorporate her art into various forms. Sadly, it took decades after her death until her fame and popularity rose. Frida Kahlo can be defined as an artist, but is also truly an artist, herself. Born …show more content…
On her death certificate, it stated that she officially died from a pulmonary embolism. However, there is a theory that she committed suicide due to her health and her final entry in her diary. She’d written, “I hope the exit is joyful — and I hope never to return — Frida.” After her death, her work went unappreciated for years, but was rediscovered by the 1970s. At that time, she had become an icon and obtained a cult-like status when her art was refurbished, many calling it “Fridamania.” During this time, the feminist movement through the 1960s and 70s was happening and Kahlo’s work was a perfect example (Vernon) of feminist ideals. In her life, Kahlo disregarded gendered beauty norms by embracing her iconic unibrow, mustache, and dressing in traditional men’s clothing from time to time (Columbia University). In 1983, her first museum opened in Mexico thirty-nine years after her death. Frida Kahlo was and is celebrated for her unique identity and ability to reflect on her own self-doubt and internal struggles through art. Though Frida Kahlo wasn’t always understood or appreciated during her own time, we can now enjoy her life and work as a strong Mexican artist, feminist, activist, and resilient

Frida Kahlo was, and still is, often referred to as one of the most influential women in the art scene. However, to me she is more than just a painter. She is someone I can relate to and who greatly inspires me. The way she was unapologetic when it came to her heritage and how she had refused to allow personal tragedy to keep her down is what really makes me look up to her. Those reasons are what really drew me in and made me want to learn more about her. Since first learning of her in eighth grade

Two complex pieces of art which will be compared and contrasted within this essay are Mary Cassatt’s Portrait of the Artist and Frida Kahlo’s Self Portrait with Monkey. Though Cassatt belonged the Impressionist movement (Streissguth 48) and Kahlo who was labeled as a member of the Surrealist movement, which she later denied (Stremmel, Kerstin, & Grosenick 1940), both paintings have an equal number of similarities as contrasting elements
Since reading my first collection of literature, “Vistas in Reading Literature: Gold Level”, I fell in love with the art of writing. Persuasive argumentatives were fun to internally debate with. Informational essays of research opened my eyes of perspective. Philosophy taught me to paint thoughts and reason onto my empty canvas. Religious texts of the Bible enlightened my soul. Oratory put a mirror in front of me to display the reflection of humanism. Literature of the classical fiction genres performed

guerrilla girls on the list of artists we were allowed to write about I knew I had to write about them. I already had some previous knowledge as to who they were, what they stood for and what type of art they created, but when I did some more in depth research on them I was completely enraptured with the message they put into their work, the thought their art work provokes, their standing in the art world, and the way they carry themselves inside and outside the art world.
