Sigmund Freud You’ve probably heard or seen of the classic “patient on the couch” form of therapy where a patient is asked to lay on a mysterious looking couch next to a chair where the therapist is to sit. The session is started by the therapist asking the patient to talk freely about what might be troubling them whether it be a dream or parts of daily life. The therapist then goes on to pick apart your discussion and go into detail on parts which he believes is where the problems are arising from, and no doubt somehow linking it back to your childhood in some way or another. He wanted to formulate a systematic way to analysis the mind to treat patients with hysteria and in ways never before thought of before. Thus his theory of psychoanalysis was born and was his solution to mental illness. He invited his patients to lay on a couch and talk freely or free associate about what was on their mind, appropriate or not. This, like previously mentioned, was his creation and served as a laboratory for his theories such was the case study of Anna O. where he originally theorized that mental illness is nothing but a physical manifestation of repressed memories and emotions. This was never before heard of in psychology where most illnesses where treated as strictly biological rather than induced by a deeper cause. Although Freud swore by this theory is merely subjective, “The patient’s “free” associations furnish only spurious confirmation of psychoanalytic interpretations, because they are so highly contaminated by the therapist’s influence after all” (Qtd. in Rothstein). Freud’s analysis of any given patient was contingent on how we was feeling that day or if he has done drug or not.
