Freedom of religion has become a controversial issue in the United States.
1. What does freedom of religion or freedom of religious expression mean?
Freedom of religion is a fundamental human right that protects the conscience of all people. It’s the right to think, express and act upon what you sincerely believe, according to the dictates of conscience. Religious freedom protects the rights of all groups of individuals, including the most vulnerable, whether religious or not. Freedom of expression has limits when it involves religious matters. Nobody is above the law no matter what color of your dress, your language, your geographical location or even your religion. Freedom of anything as enshrined in the constitution is relative. There is no absolute freedom(i.e.) freedom to do whatever you like. After all, the constitution guarantees freedom of speech. To me, freedom of religion is respecting others beliefs and making genuine connections by speaking the language they cherish. Stereotypes are exaggerated beliefs usually associated with a group of people and based on race, ethnicity, gender, religion, or sexual orientation. Stereotypes generally begin with a particular belief about an undesirable characteristic of group. One of the dysfunctions of stereotyping is prejudice (Intro to Sociology, pg 262-263).
