Freedom of religion has become a controversial issue in the United States.
1. What does freedom of religion or freedom of religious expression mean?
Freedom of religion is a fundamental human right that protects the conscience of all people. It’s the right to think, express and act upon what you sincerely believe, according to the dictates of conscience. Religious freedom protects the rights of all groups of individuals, including the most vulnerable, whether religious or not. Freedom of expression has limits when it involves religious matters. One cannot provoke, one cannot insult other people’s faith, one can’t make fun of faith. Religious freedoms mean you have the right to your beliefs. Religious freedom doesn’t give people the right to

Nobody is above the law no matter what color of your dress, your language, your geographical location or even your religion. Freedom of anything as enshrined in the constitution is relative. There is no absolute freedom(i.e.) freedom to do whatever you like. After all, the constitution guarantees freedom of speech. To me, freedom of religion is respecting others beliefs and making genuine connections by speaking the language they cherish. It’s important for every American to observe and use all their rights freedom of speech to freedom of religion to freedom to bear arms and so on. Our founding fathers wanted us to defend ourselves and more importantly to use the rights afforded to …show more content…
Stereotypes are exaggerated beliefs usually associated with a group of people and based on race, ethnicity, gender, religion, or sexual orientation. Stereotypes generally begin with a particular belief about an undesirable characteristic of group. One of the dysfunctions of stereotyping is prejudice (Intro to Sociology, pg 262-263). Prejudice is everywhere. When we look upon prejudice, it's through every aspect of society. J.J. Cole states that, when she became into adulthood and graduated high school, she realize that people were having issues of disrespect base upon their race or ethnicity, including with their gender, likelihood, and their life
Citizens of America can choose their religion, they can also choose what they want to say, through freedom of speech. These rights can sometimes be disrespected by others who do not have the same beliefs or opinions. For example, if a company does not want to provide service to someone based on a different belief
Prejudice is the attitude of conveying negative stereotypes to a particular group, usually known as the out-groups. Usually the stereotypes are generalizations based on superficial opinions, so they have an invalid connotation behind it. Stereotypes in some cases evoke prejudice mindsets, leading to discriminate a certain ethnic group, age group, religion, seuxal orienntation, or body size. Stereotypes are usually socially learned from one’s environment and latched onto the mind of a young child. This could possibly later influence their opinion about something they are not fully educated on. One cannot control what they are taught, but one can control what they do with that information. They can either not believe a word of it or take it into
...First Amendment right of religious freedom applies not only to white, Christians, but to all ethnicities and religions. In no way has the government limited anybody’s religious opportunities. Instead, the government has given all citizens the opportunity to practice their beliefs without worry or pressures coming from one religiously dominant group. America must change with time and continue to improve with regards to its various inhabitants.
There are many exceptions to the first amendment in which limits a citizens abilities to practicing freedom of religion and speech. Yelling “fire” in a movie theater, for example, is illegal and an exception to the first amendment. Speech that intends or causes harm is also an exception to the first amendment. Sutlaana Freeman, for instance, is a Muslim American in the state of Florida decided to wear a veil across her face. When going to take a photo for her driver’s license, she was asked to remove her veil, as the state of Florida requires a fully uncovered face for an ID photo. Freeman refused arguing that the first amendment’s freedom of religion allows her to practice her religion. After fighting the state of Florida for her “religious rights”, the state declared that an ID photo must fully reveal a person’s face for easy identification and for safety. (Barnet 9). In this case, the safety of the people surmounted the religious rights of one person. These exceptions are enforced to increase the safety of the people and to prevent conflict among people and government.
No other independent enlightenment in the world allows individual independence to the United States of America. American courts, especially the Supreme Court, have improved a set of lawful policies that comprehensively shelter all types of the power of appearance. When it comes to appraising the level to which people take benefit of the occasion to convey believes, many members of culture can be accountable for misusing the boundary of the First Amendment through openly offending others through racism or obscenity (Karen O’Connor & Larry J. Sabato 2006). America is what it is because of the Bill of rights and the Constitution of the United States of America. The ratification of the Constitution warranted that religious dissimilarity would continue to develop in the United States. American has enhanced a different nature toward the power of word throughout history.
“What is a stereotype? Stereotypes are qualities assigned to groups of people related to their race, nationality and sexual orientation, to name a few. Because they generalize groups of people in manners that lead to discrimination and ignore the diversity within groups, stereotypes should be avoided” (“What Is a Stereotype”). Both positive and negative stereotypes exist, but both are equally dangerous. All stereotypes, whether positive or negative, limit whatever group of people it is assigned to to a certain set of traits, and let’s face it, a human being’s personality is far too complex to be limited to a mere set of three or four traits. A stereotype creates a preconceived notion of how an individual belonging to a certain group should look, act, dress, and even speak. A prime example of this would be the very recent happenings in the case of Trayvon Martin. Trayvon Martin was a seventeen year old African-American male, profiled as a criminal.
The concept of stereotypes is what we have been created in our presumptions of a person without even having an idea of how they are. It is a common thing in our society on which sometimes it can create tolerance or intolerance toward other groups because of different ideas or traditions. The film by Gregory Nava My Family and the book by Victor Martinez Parrot in the Oven: Mi Vida are clear examples of the concept of stereotypes. In addition, the film Real Women Have Curves by Patricia Cardoso demonstrates some of the ways stereotypes can affect one’s own ethnic group. Racial stereotypes can be good or bad creating influences toward a group. In this case, stereotypes can create bad influences causing misperceptions, confusion within the same
In the U.S. constitution, The Bill Of Rights has a list of rights that are legal in America. One of the many rights that are included in The Bill Of Rights is Freedom Of Religion, and that would mean Muslim have a right to be Muslims just the same as Christians, Mormons, etc. Since September 11, 2000, Many innocent Muslims have been discriminated against for something they didn't do, but were the same religion as the people who were involved in this attack, so they are guilty of what? believing in something. “Religious freedom is one of America's most fundamental liberties, and a central principle upon which our nation was founded. Unfortunately, though, throughout America's history, almost every religious group has been the target of discrimination
The Bill of Rights includes several amendments describing the rights the people have as well as the things that are prohibited in our nation. The First Amendment states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for the redress of grievances.”(U.S. Const. amend. I) Out of the five freedoms, religion, speech, press, assemble, and petition; religion is the specific one that deals with beliefs. What is the definition of religion? According to the dictionary, the definition of religion is “the belief in a god, service and worship of God or the supernatural, and commitment or devotion to religious faith or observance.” (Merriam-Webster, 2014)
An educated family man dedicated to saving lives and easing the suffering of others was shot down and killed in the early morning light outside of his office simply because of his beliefs and the job he performs (ABC News). There was rioting and death in a distant country resulting from the remarks of a religious speaker (ABC News). A businessman on a plane trip was taken from his seat without explanation and interrogated for hours based solely on his nationality (CNN). Caught on videotape, an uneducated man was beaten senseless due to the color of his skin by those sworn to protect him (ABC News). A mother weeps; her loving, sensitive teenage son was killed by a mob because of his sexual preference (Newsweek 6). Each victim was a minority by numbers or views and was subjected to violent behavior for the crime of being themselves. Individualism is a right guaranteed to all people through the writings implemented by our founding fathers, which our government secures through the Constitutional Amendments. If we fail, however, to remember that freedom of speech belongs to all the people regardless of beliefs, we sacrifice all people's rights.
While similar, the terms stereotype, prejudice, and discrimination all have their own distinct meanings. Gorham defines stereotypes as the organization of beliefs and assumptions people have toward social groups (19). Stereotypes can often be misrepresentative of a particular group because people unknowingly make assumptions about other people based on the knowledge they have acquired from media and/or people not in that particular social group. Examples of stereotypes can be beliefs that people of Asian descent are inherently good at math or that all black men are criminals. Unlike stereotypes which are predetermined assumptions people make about social groups, prejudice is holding negative feelings toward a group of people without fairly
In many circles of the world, various groups of people distinguish themselves from one another through religion, language, culture, and sometimes gender. People also develop stereotypes about a particular group of people in order to identify them. However, most of the time, these stereotypes hold true for only some members of a group. Sometimes, these stereotypes are just plain misconceptions that do not even apply to the group they claim to be. Stereotypes are placed on people because it is a way to easily identify what type of person or ethnicity an individual is.
The individual right to freedom of religion means that you can freely practice your religion without the government interfering. It’s in the first amendment of the Bill of Rights, in the Constitution, it protects all U.S. citizens to a certain extent. The first amendment went into effect on December 15th, 1791. 1The first amendment states “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof” (American Civil Liberties Union). There are two clauses in the U.S. Constitution that guarantee freedom of religion. The Establishment Clause which prohibits the government from passing legislation to establish an official religion. There is also the Free Exercise Clause, it prohibits the government from interfering with someone’s practice of religion (LII). The first amendment also sets a fine line between states’ rights and the churches rights (Black,130). Throughout time, many things have happened to where the first amendment has had to been set into play.
Freedom of religion is the right to practice whatever religion one chooses. According to, the Statistics in 2016, eighty-three percent of the majority of the Americans follow Christian religions. However, the other twelve percent, have other faiths, atheist, agnostics, don't care or don't know. Leaving the 5 percent Non-Christian Faiths, like Jerusalem's, Islamics, Buddhism, & Hinduism. In 1941, the military ordered ''white blood only'' donations for white troops, so they didn't have worry about other religions other than their own. Also, because slavery had not been abolished by president Lincoln , so therefore this freedom did not apply to them. Now, thanks to this freedom, Army's have improved and Army programs are available for all cultures and ethnicities. Also, a Muslim police officer who says he was suspended during the fasting month of Ramadan for refusing to shave his one-inch beard. If you didn't know, Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim year, during which strict fasting is observed from sunrise to sunset it is forbidden to shave your beard at this time. Additionally, In 2011, he was required to sign a form agreeing not to wear his beard longer than one millimeter, but he continued to wear it longer and was fired. Therefore, his boss violated his first amendment. So, if someone very serious about their religion fought for our country and didn't have this freedom, they would die in
A stereotype is defined as a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. There are multitudes of stereotypes in our society today ranging from the physical attributes of a person or groups of people to the behaviors of a person or groups of people. According to An Introduction to Logic, “Often the fallacy of hasty generalization can lead to damaging stereotypes made on the basis of just a few examples. Stereotypes about women, religious groups, minorities, ethnic groups, and so forth are often based on this type of reasoning” (Mosser, Ch. 4, pg. 13). Insufficient evidence is often the cause of inaccurate stereotypes and can be detrimental for everyone involved. Throughout my life, I have been placed into three stereotyped categories for example: being a redhead and hot-tempered, being a Christian that hates gays and finally, being married to a black man and will inevitably end up divorced because of the differences within the black and white cultures, these are fallacies that do not have any validity.
