Despite the fact that he did eventually escape his father?s wrath, the struggle with his father?s aggressive behavior and lack of love resulted in a coldness that resided in Troy?s heart toward life and love. His father did not care about his children; children were there to work for the food that he ate first. Troy do not want his son Cory’s life to be like him, but yet he raised him to be an independent man like his was. And it is a conflict in their relationship, once Ewan said that Dorothy only married him for his mother, but he said it only half joking. He clearly resents his mother for his childhood; he doesn’t even believe she loves him. While Dorothy never can understand Ewan and thinks that everything Lily does is brilliant, both in art and in lifestyle. Once she got children of her own, Dorothy got even more envious of Lily’s way of living. She hated the domesticated life, standing by the usual gender roles of that the mother stays home and takes care of her children while the man is out working.

Additionally, despite Linton’s conquest for love, Linton’s father despises him to a point that leads Linton to be rude and to display the characteristics of hate toward the one person he truly loves. He begins to torture his former love, Cathy. Obviously, he likes to speak to her with no respect like his father trains him to do. Kelly K. Howes says that Linton has no choice when it comes to choosing his fate. He must marry the young Catherine due to his father’s manipulation (3).

Janie resisted this man's physical attraction to her because she was not in love with him. Eventually he got frustrated with her not taking a liking to him and made her to hard chores around the house. She grew short with him and left him with to be with another man. Janie started a new lifestyle with Joe Starks. He swept her off her feet and made Janie's beautiful vision of love come back.

One theme of the book is weakness of character; this is shown by Ethan’s marraige, his inability to stand up to his wife, and his involvement concerning the "accident." The first way weakness of charcter is shown in the book is through the marriage of Ethan and his wife. He married her because she had tried to help his mother recover from an illness, and once his mother died he could not bear the thought of living in the house alone. His wife was seven years his senior and always seemed to have some kind of illness. It seemed all she ever did was complain, and he resented this because it stifled his growing soul.

However, Amir, who did not know that Hassan was his half-brother, thought that Baba did not love him because he killed his wife when she was giving birth to him. Additionally, in Amir’s childhood Baba always questioned Amir‘s abilities, while he praised Hassan’s skills which made Amir bitter toward Hassan. Amir was brainwashed by the fact that Hassan was only a Hazara servant, and it did not suit him to play with a Hazara boy. Although Amir loved Hassan, he struggled throughout his childhood to show it to him due to lack of attention from Baba and the segregation between Hazara and Pashtun. But his entire life, he felt ashamed of what he did to Hassan.

Franz's mother, Julie, was a dedicated housewife who constantly sided with Kafka's father and could not understand her son's dreams of becoming writer. In The Metamorphosis our first impression of Gregor’s father is that of a strong spoken man with a short temper. Gregor’s father cannot understand nor does he seem to care about his sons’ new condition. In the story Gregor is pressured into working at a job that he cannot stand in order to support the family and pay off his fathers’ debt. The interaction between the main character Gregor and his father are comparable to the author and his father.

The main character, Rachel was born without a father and to a mother who doesn’t care about her, telling her “she is a nail in her coffin.” Rachel’s mother also severely beats her at times. Rachel is mainly raised by her grandparents and her aunts and uncles while her mother works at a factory named The Congo. Rachel’s mother agrees to marry Alfred Caluwaerts because he doesn’t mind that she had a daughter, to give Rachel a last name and to tell everyone Rachel had a father. However, Rachel doesn’t see him as a father because he didn’t talk to her and just wanted to get rid of her. However, Alfred soon leaves because of Rachel’s mother constant controlling attitude and cheating with Geoffrey Voorst.

Dave is also mad how everyone is treating him, and how all he ever gets do is work all the time and has never been given anything in his life. Dave is even mad at his family, especially his mother for ratting him out. He did not want to sell the gun and give the money to Mr. Hawkins as his father instructed him to do.
