In paragraph 7 Douglass is starting to hate his life, which makes him eager to hear people talk about slavery. “I often found myself regretting my own existence, and wishing myself dead…” (Douglass, 103) “While in this state of mind, I was eager to hear any one speak of slavery.” (Douglass, 103)
While listening to peoples’ conversations about slavery, the word “abolitionist” would come up often. Douglass set off to find what the word meant. It takes a while for Frederick to finally find a definition. When he looked in the dictionary, it wasn’t of much help; “I found it was ‘the act of abolishing’; but then I did not know what was to be abolished.” (Douglass, 104) Frederick also tried looking for the word in newspapers.
