1. Foxconn strengths, they are the only company to manufacture the Apple iPad and one of only two companies to manufacture Apple iPhone’s. Foxconn is also one of the largest employers in the world, with about one million employees at the China plant alone. Foxconn also has low labor costs due to the manufacturing plant is located in China. Foxconn also has weaknesses, they are getting a bad reputation do to employees committing suicide, and a tragic explosion occurred due to unsafe working conditions. Foxconn does have opportunities, when tragedy struck, instead of trying to cover it up, they acted and increased their public image by, improving work conditions, increasing employees pay, and they sponsors employee outtings. Foxconn also has threats they are facing, due to them trying to increase employee morale they are not seeing much of a profit, if they have to increase their prices Apple may chose to use another company to manufacture it’s products. 2. Foxconn is running an exporting business that is based in China but serves developed nations such as the United States. Foxconn is facing unique challenges, and they have to keep a good public image, they will risk losing Apple’s and other American business contracts if they don’t continue to improve the working conditions for the employees. Foxconn will need mangers that have the “courage to take a stand” to improve environmental and working conditions, “acts with integrity” will tell the truth when something is unsafe, “seeks feedback” and “uses feedback” in order to get a better understanding of how the employees needs could be better met, and be “culturally adventurous” if Foxconn is looking to open more plants in other countries to try and keep their costs down. In China, Kelsey Timmerman spent time with a couple who worked at the Teva factory, traveled to the countryside to meet the couple’s son, insert name, who hasn’t seen his parents in three years due to his parents working long hours and it being expensive to take a train ride. In the US, the author visited one of a few clothing factories in the US to talk to the workers about his shorts, and the decrease of American garment factories. This new hip clothing store has labeled itself a sweatshop free. It employs over five thousand people at the Los Angeles location (Li par 27). This is incredible. It has given the people of Los Angeles many opportunities to improve their lives and to keep a steady job. Further investigations revealed that Foxconn had been guilty of unsafe and unfair working environments long before the incidents, which included the employment of extended working hours, discrimination, and military management techniques (Xu & Li, 2013). Due to Foxconn’s sole focus on maintaining businesses relationships by fulfilling Apple’s demand of technical products, their subsequent mistreatment of employees was exacerbated and generated 80-100 hours of forced overtime (Xu & Li, 2013). However, in an attempt to combat the negative publicity, each firm denied responsibility to the incidents, which ultimately added fuel to the media fire (Xu & Li, 2013). Foxconn has factories in Asia, Europe, Mexico and South America why is it that only China’s Foxoconn was in highlight and not any other country? While the Chinese factories happened to be the largest factories in China, these factories are also facilitated with dormitories and other infrastructure to host the workers and provide workers to go back at end of the 12 hour shift to relax and reenergize for the next shift. A quarter of the employees live in these so called dormitories. My Case study will analyze how the various news sources revealed the global sweatshop to the world and the reactions by the companies who were using Foxconn to manufacture electronic goods. The Chinese newspaper displayed Foxconn employees having social and psychological reasons leading to suicides whereas US news showed it as human rights violation. Both of them did not acknowledge the social justice and world economy aspects and steps that were taken by the electronics giants to rectify the problems that were being faced in Wuhan, China.
The Chinese steel industry is considered to be a pillar industry in China’s economy as it is vital to its economic development. Therefore, under the 10th Five Year Plan for National Economic and Social development (2001-2005), the Chinese government initiated massive amounts of subsidies to Chinese steel firms believing that it will be beneficial to the industry’s growth. Since then, the Chinese government has promulgated other plans that extended and increased many of the subsidies initiated. Though seemingly advantageous, the subsidies need not be beneficial. Thus, this paper will assess the impacts of state subsidies on the Chinese Steel industry and argue that subsidies have actually been detrimental than beneficial.
