The Four Freedom Park was built to celebrates the Four Freedoms Franklin D. Roosevelt articulated in his 1941 State of the Union address. 1941 was a period of time where the entire world was in chaos and people were anxious and worried because of the war. Before the Four Freedoms speech, American were just experienced the Great Depression and was still in the World War II. The Four Freedoms speech can be viewed as a move to settle people’s anxious mind and the start of liberalism. 1960s was the climax of liberalism including Civil Right Movement and Women’s Movement. It was the Four Freedom speech by Franklin D.Roosevelt that helped flourish liberalism. Part of the reasons it was built is to appreciate how humans have regained freedom for themselves again, a priceless gift. The importance of freedom directly show in the geographical location of The Four Freedom Park. New York is one of the most prosperous city in America. It is the economic center with the highest price index around the world. The value of the location where The Four Freedom Park is built is tremendous. The contrast of the skyscrapers and the park located on the East River create a spatial moment of conflict. However, the conflict is only visible when one is at the park and look at the Manhattan. It is hardly to see that contraction when one is at the Manhattan city. As more and more skyscrapers keep building up in the city, the view of the park fades out. Just like how humans view freedom now, as humans start to forget how hard and how much they had sacrificed to regain freedom, they do not appreciate freedom anymore. Many things can change in twenty years, there is evidence of this idea throughout our entire history, especially during the time when Franklin D. Roosevelt was President in 1941 as well as the time when John F. Kennedy was President in 1961. Both Roosevelt’s “Four Freedoms” speech and Kennedy’s Inaugural Address discussed the concept of freedom. However Roosevelt’s speech approached the concept of freedom by wanting Americans to support the allies in the war that was about to start whereas Kennedy’s speech approached the concept of freedom by making peace with others.

This divide was caused by an economic crisis that changed the social dynamics of the city. This change allowed for consequences such as the injustice of the Central Park Five and the causes of this injustice can be explained by three different theoretical perspectives: the Structural Functionalist Perspective, the Symbolic Interactionist Perspective, and the Conflict Perspective.

Roosevelt delivered a speech to the American people known as the “four freedoms” on January 6, 1941.1 The main purpose of this speech was to rally support to enter World War 2, however in order to declare war the United States of America had to abandon the isolationist policies that emerged out of WWI. These four freedoms would establish human rights after the war, but more importantly they would resonate throughout the United States for decades after the war. Some of these freedoms have remained the same, and some of these freedoms have changed throughout the years. We will be looking at three periods and comparing how the freedoms varied from each of the three periods.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) and President John F. Kennedy (JFK) were both very inspirational people who gave important speeches during their presidency. These men both wrote about their own ideas in each speech they presented. The speech from Roosevelt’s “Four Freedoms” and Kennedy’s “Inaugural Address” both write of their own beliefs of freedom, and their purposes. Although during Roosevelt’s time in 1941 the situation was different from Kennedy’s situation, because Roosevelt was entering WWII and Kennedy was in a cold war.

The main content of this film was to explain to us how New York city is always changing. First, we saw how from the 1880’s immigrants started coming to New York from Europe due to the industrial revolution that was happening there. When they got to New York they described the good feeling they got when they first saw the Statue of Liberty, it was a feeling of freedom. They described New York as “A City of Heaven.” Many and many of them were coming to New York to get that freedom that they did not have in their countries. Immigrants basically changed New York and New York changed them too. In the film we saw that because of the growing population, they were obligated to start constructing up. With the help of new technologies like the elevator and steel, out came the skyscraper. Everything that happened during this time made what is New York today. New York changed with the immigrant labor, for example, they were the one who constructed skyscraper, which are one of the things that makes New York unique today. Almost all of those immigrants were farmers, and they changed with New York, an example, is when those farmers came to work with steel which was something new to them. Immigrants worked hard, they did whatever was necessary to survive. Also, they wanted their kids to keep their culture, which made New York a multicultural city.
On September 9th, 2017 at approximately 7 p.m., I went to Gracedale Public Park to carefully conduct my observation on the individuals, who were at the park and their specific activities in the one hour of time. When I got there, the weather was beautiful with soft winds, a clear sky and with some dim sunlight. The park was full of people of all ages. Though, there were more kids than adults and some teenagers. There were many bicycles and strollers parked beside the tree I sat under. After a couple of minutes, the park filled up with more and more individuals and everyone seemed busy doing their own actions.
Well that’s simple. It was designed way back in the 1800, for the public. The land, over 750 acres, was given from the New York State Legislator, in 1853, to create the first major landscaped park, in central Manhattan. The state held a competition of what design the park was going to have. Frederick Olmsted and Calvert Vaux won the competition in 1858. The park held up well at first. People respected the land. During the early 1900’s, the park took a great downfall. Instead of it begin known for its beauty, it was known for the illegal activity that was going on. Eventually the state got together and realized they were failing on their duties. Robert Moses, the park commissioner from 1934-1960, got approved from federal funding’s, to restore most structures. Again, after he left office, the depression was also in place, the park went back down a dark path. The people lost care in the park. In 1974, park funders got management together to raise more money to restore the park once again. Latter down the road Doug Blonsley started working with a woman, named Betsey, in 1993- 2008. The park hasn’t seen any better days, than the days of today. All it took is a little care and the park is looking better than it ever have in the last 150
