The United States Department of Agriculture has reported that approximately 23.5 million Americans currently live in food deserts, including 6.5 million children (Shannon 248). Food deserts have left Americans without the option to provide fresh food resources for themselves and their families. As a result of the lack of food provided for Americans, obesity and illness rates have increased for people living in these areas. Food deserts have created a negative effect on people by causing a rise in obesity and illnesses, and causing difficulties in families. In order to fix this issue there needs to be a movement that will include placing supermarkets in food deserts and these markets should provide a variety of fresh food sources. Supermarkets have been closing down in poverty filled areas, which has made it even harder for people to access food. Food deserts have created a difficult environment to live in, causing families to fall further into sickness. Mari Gallagher, a community development practitioner, has made a report on food deserts and the effects location has on someone. In Chicago, Gallagher made a report on how health has affected the people living within the food deserts. Results have proven that in Chicago alone there are over 100,000 single mothers and their children living in food deserts (Gallagher). There are many Americans living without proper access to food, and that is affecting the nation as whole. The rise in illnesses and obesity rates has caused many health problems and has increased the amount of people that are being hospitalized. Children are battling diabetes and other life changing illnesses at a young age. This is causing families to have more expenses and increase the poverty rate in the areas they live in. Michelle Obama launched a movement, called Let’s Go! , as an attempt to abolish food deserts in approximately 7 years (Shannon 252). The movement has not acquired the desired results of the beginning of the movement which was to eliminate all food deserts and decrease childhood obesity. The movement has recently been more focused in helping children to be fit and lead healthier lives. In order to solve the problem there should be a more in depth analysis of the situation and more of an open mind as to how to fix it. Although placing supermarkets in areas that lack fresh food sources would help the ambiance, it will not solve all problems. Many people living in impoverished areas have not been able to afford transportation to these markets. Opening up a company that gives free or low cost cars according to income would be a miraculous idea for people who cannot afford their own transportation. In accordance to the movement, experts in dietary foods should make presentations and events where healthier food options are given to those living in food deserts. In these events healthier foods will be distributed to families to give a better dietary
