The sun is beating down on the water with immense heat, bringing its temperature higher and higher every hour. I can see bass jumping left and right from the shore. My father and I decide to launch the boat around mid-day. It takes ten minutes to get the boat uncovered and ready to launch. We finally get the boat in the water and set off to our favorite spots. These spots are usually the stumps in the middle, or the shallow areas near the back of the lake where there is a lot of cover. The dull hum of the electric motor is all the noise you can hear as the boat glides along in the bath water. The wake of the boat and the breeze in the air are the only disturbances on the surface of the water. We are coming up on a stump, so I grab a white and blue spinner bait and tie it on. The gold spinner on the bait should contrast nicely with the color of the water and make the bait irresistible to the fish. Once we get within 40 feet from the stump, I reach back and cast as far as I can, so I can pull my line past the stump. I start to reel in and as soon as my bait swims past the stump, I feel a strike and see a tremendous splash. I was raised in Jacksonville, Florida; “the river city” as most natives call it. As stated by the St. Johns River Water Management Disctrict the city has this nickname because it is home to the largest river in Florida, the St. Johns. The St. Johns is also one of the two rivers in the United States that flows north (2013). Since I was surrounded by it my whole life, activities involving water were very common. One of my family’s favorite things to do is have a fishing tournament for Easter on my grandparents’ dock on the St. Johns River.
External and internal conflict can bring out the worst in people, and may benefit or harm them further on. A conflict that challenges the vision of reality for a person can be very difficult to deal with. “Two Fishermen” by Morley Callaghan shows itself as a significant example of this. The story features a small town news reporter, Michael Foster, who aligns with a hangman, K. Smith (“Smitty”), who is in town to execute Thomas Delaney on a controversial case. Michael feels a great deal of pressure from this relationship, as Smitty is frowned upon for his job title in times of controversy and misjustice, leading to a moral dilemma in which Michael is forced to either stand up for the dignity of others or fall into general social opinions.

Fish is a book about the importance of a good attitude in the workplace. The book stresses that you must choose your attitude each day that you go to work. Attitude was at the center of the book’s message, but it was only a part of that message. There were four steps in the fish philosophy of a happy workplace: choose your attitude, play, make their day, and be present. Choose your attitude tells the reader that you must choose what you are going to make of each day. If you go to work unhappy you will make everyone else around you unhappy and your time there all the much longer. If you go to work happy and looking forward to the day, others will be happy and your time there will go by faster. The second step is play. You can bring fun into almost any job. The benefits of having the play step in the workplace are enormous. The employees will be happy, the customers will enjoy the atmosphere, and it will make everyone’s life a little bit easier. Third in the fish philosophy is “make their day.” Including customers in the fun and games will create happy, satisfied customers. The final step in the philosophy is to be present. You must be fully present at work for your fellow employees as well as the customers. Being fully present includes making the customer your number one priority. The message that I got from the book is that if you follow the fish philosophy you will have a more productive workplace that you will enjoy coming to each day.
Hunting over bait is a debated issue across the country. Baiting deer has a negative effect on deer populations as well as other non-target species and habitats. The potential for disease transmission between species is far more prevalent in areas where baiting practices are administered than those that are not. The man had experienced adulthood, and therefore could never experience the lake as he did when he was a child. Except for the sound of outboard motors, the lake was pretty much the same as it had been before. "The only thing that was wrong now, really, was the sound of the place, an unfamiliar nervous sound of the outboard motors" (White 153). This "nervous" sound suggests the nervousness of adulthood; the anxieties that sweep through the minds of people who have matured. The noise created by the outboard motors reflects the noise inside the man's consciousness. The sun is radiant and scorching, as always when it’s August in Michigan, while the lake water is warm with occasional ripples flowing through as the wind subtly blows over.
