First impressions are crucial and more so in the business world. It may only take just a quick glance, maybe three seconds, for someone to evaluate you when you meet for the first time. In this very short time, the other person forms an opinion about you based on your appearance, your body language, your demeanor, your mannerisms, and how you are dressed. With every new encounter, you are evaluated and yet another person's impression of you is formed. These first impression are impossible to reverse, making those first encounters extremely important because they set the tone for all the relationships that follows whether it’s personal or business related. After first reading John as an extrovert, I picture John as a career-oriented, optimistic, young and social employee. This forms the initial characterization of someone who is goal-oriented and is willing to take the extra mile for his job. The tone is set by the pleasant story which shows a sun soaked streets as well as John’s casual and chipper mood. He also seems extremely social at the same time as shown by the conversations he has with the other people on his walk. This is shown by the conversation with the acquaintance and his meeting with his friend who walked in the store (“First impressions,” 2010). John also seems like a very social and young person due to him meeting with the girl his friend introduced him the night before. The scenario of the story for example, using “girl” instead of “woman” implies that John is younger and possibly single, with the possibility to have a night out on a work week. At the same time, there are also negative connotations to the first scenario. In conclusion, first impressions are extremely crucial of how we define someone’s future interactions. It can affect any future rapport by not giving a good first impression. In John’s two scenarios, as an extrovert leads to positive first impression and great social skills. In John’s second scenario as a gloomy introvert whom is largely alone, remains in a negative state of mind, despite the attempts in presenting him in a different light in the end. As a result, John needs to develop a better social skills and he needs to learn how to give great first impressions if he wants to avoid loneliness and have a successful career.
