In the novel, In His Steps, Henry Maxwell was the Reverend of the First Church of Raymond. At the beginning of the novel, he viewed the Rectangle, an area in the town of Raymond, and other places like it with fear and dislike. This was because these places were full of sin, drunkenness and immorality. He did not believe that it was a city full of children and disciples of God. An example of Maxwell’s view of the people in the Rectangle is how he responded to the tramp, Jack Manning in the first chapter of the novel. Jack had been walking around the town, asking the people in Raymond for work. When he went to Maxwell at the First Church of Raymond, Maxwell said that he didn’t have any work for him, apologized and told Manning that he hoped the tramp would find work somewhere else in town. On the following Sunday, Manning spoke up, and told his story to Maxwell’s congregation. He explained that he did not understand why they said that claimed did was Christ did, but ignored him and didn’t listen to him. He was very nervous because these people were not his congregation and were not children of God from his point of view. When he started to speak, the people in the Rectangle continued to talk amongst each other as they were prior. This caused a wave of terror to hit Maxwell. It was only after he asked Rachel Winslow to sing something for the people in the tent at the Rectangle that Maxwell was able to speak properly and more confidently.
