The film, Under the Same Moon, is a great piece of work that portrays the extreme difficulties faced by illegal immigrants. It was saddening to see all of the everyday struggle and to know that this is going on in the world to this day. I found that this film really goes with the what we learned in module 2 about immigrants in Guatemala and the movement in Chiapas, Mexico. After learning about immigration and knowing more about Mexico, I feel as though this film does an excellent job on showing a realistic example of an illegal immigrant doing all they can to make money for their loved ones. I would definitely recommend the movie to really anyone. It is educational, emotional, and has a great plot showing a whole different culture.

It was a beautiful story that was filled with emotions. I love films with a happy ending, and this one definitely had one as Carlitos and his mother got to reunite after nine years of separation. I loved getting to see the cultural differences and also getting to see how the illegal immigrants overcame their struggles. I am very happy I learned more about illegal immigration in class because I never quite understood why they would leave their homes for the unknown. But in reality, these people really had no other choice but to risk that because there were absolutely no job opprotuinies where they were. They had to get up and go, leaving their loved ones behind, to find a job to earn enough money to live an okay life. It is sad to see how hard it is for illegal immigrants and after learning all of this, my heart is heavy for them. I wish they had better jobs available to them with a reasonable pay and I wish that illegal immigration did not have to be a thing, but that they could just come here as they please. They are only trying to better their lives’ and their families lives. They are selfless people willing to do whatever it takes to provide for their loved ones. Under the Same Moon did a great job of portraying the true life of an illegal immigrant and I would recommend this film to anyone wanting to know more about it and the great deal of struggle that comes with
I found the play very interesting and could not stop reading especially because I knew that the play was based on a true story a crime that actually took place against Chicanos. I did not know much about the sleepy lagoon case before I read the play. Having an interest on the subject helped me stay focus on the story and kept me reading. However, I kept wanting a stage visual of the play so that I could stay alert. As I watched the movie for the first time I felt great and yet, a bit bewildered to see so many brown faces on stage at the same time but ultimately I truly loved the feeling of it. I only wish that more plays or even movies would include Latinos onto the stage. I feel that the fact that Luis Valdez created a more American type of play made it more possible to be seen by many more people. If Zoot Suit would have been kept as an acto its audience would have been selective and minimal.
In Michelle's paper she recaps the history of Mexicans in the United States that was not completely dealt with in either the website or the movie. Michelle points out that the Latin@s history is essential to understanding the Mexicans experience. She also wrote of the Mexican's el movemiento and how the website and movie brought about different accounts of this momentous event.
After reading The Book of the Unknown Americans, I realized how difficult immigrating to the United States can be. I am an immigrant also, so just reading the story makes me relate to many problems immigrants experience relocating to a different country. Immigrants often face many issues and difficulties, but for some it is all worth it, but for others there comes a point in time where they have to go back to their hometown. Alma and Arturo Rivera came to the United States to better their life, but also so that Maribel could attend a special education school. While Arturo had a job things had gone well for the family, but once Arturo lost the job and passed away the two of them had to go back because they felt that that was the best option for them. Reading this book made me realize how strong an individual has to be to leave their own country and relocate somewhere else not knowing if this will better your life or cause one to suffer.
The cycle of the moon is linked to the tides of the ocean, no stronger is the influence of the moon than at the end of its cycle when fullest. Like the ocean, the moon has impressive sway over many aspects of our life. Rarely does the moon get credited with the odd occurrences in life, however in the highly entertaining comedy, Moonstruck, the characters are strongly aware of the presence of the moon and how it makes them feel. This move portrays beautifully two intense themes; infidelity and the comically big attitudes within Italian communities. I will break down these themes and show how well they compliment each other in this three time oscar winning movie.

Rosario send back money she makes in the US to her family in Mexico. But when an unfortunate cause of events, Carlitos grandmother dies. Carlitos is then left to live with his aunt and uncle, which does not make him very happy. He wants to be with his mother. The plot of the story is a hardworking father that comes to this country with his sons and he wants to work hard and make something of himself in order to give his sons a better life but throughout the whole story he comes across many problems such as discrimination, abuse, money, gangs, stereotypes and many other problems. Bajo el mismo cielo shows us that even though we are in the same place or under the same sky things are different for immigrants. The struggle immigrants go through in the show is the pure truth of what we see in our country. Race is a major factor in the show and we see how the Hispanic race is perceived by different people. In my opinion, the most interesting part of Labor and Legality was “Meet the Lions”. Learning about each of the ten male Lions was so interesting and insightful. It opened up a new lense in my worldview. Obviously, I have not had experience with undocumented immigrants. I know nothing about what they do to get here, why they come here, etc. By reading personal accounts, my worldview was able to shift in a new direction. Not only do I now see that undocumented immigrants are needed in America, but they are people just like any citizen here. As said before, undocumented immigrants, like the Lions, do the jobs that most Americans do not want to do. Low paying jobs are the ones people steer clear of if they are older than 20 years of age. They are NOT stealing “our” jobs, they are taking the jobs that you do not want. They are hard working people who will work in stench, who will clean the dirtiest of bathrooms, and who will slave in the sun picking tomatoes for a better tomorrow for their families. I know nothing about the politics involved when it comes to immigration, but I do know that it is extremely difficult for an undocumented immigrant to get citizenship. The film tells two distinct stories. The first story is a light hearted ethnic comedy about the growing friendship between an Italian American (Bruno, a man with little positive to say about illegal immigrants finds himself working with one in this film) and a Mexican immigrant (Ignacio) both struggling with their co-dependency for each other and the stronger need for a paycheck. The second story tells us about just how uncertain the life of a migrant worker can be.
I think it did a great job of showing how a family can come to view addictive and abnormal behavior as normal. I would recommend this movie to friends. I feel that it gives great insight into the dynamics of how the disease of alcoholism can trickle down the family tree affecting everyone it touches in such profound ways. Other than the lack of physical abuse I could see myself playing most of the roles the kids did as far as lost child and hero, I remember trying to fulfill most of those roles when I was younger trying anything from trying harder in school to trying to do chores to perfection in the hopes that I could through my works keep my parents from drinking. This a movie about a Latino boxing family and it is refreshing to see a movie about a Latino family where the roles are actually played by Latino actors. The movie stars Jimmy Smitts, Jon Seda, and Paul Rodriguez in a role you wouldn't expect. We got the chance to preview the movie last night and it is a great movie with a lot of comedy and still very heart-warming.
This movie is a wonderful production starting from 1960 and ending in 1969 covering all the different things that occurred during this unbelievable decade. The movie takes place in many different areas starring two main families; a very suburban, white family who were excepting of blacks, and a very positive black family trying to push black rights in Mississippi. The movie portrayed many historical events while also including the families and how the two were intertwined. These families were very different, yet so much alike, they both portrayed what to me the whole ‘message’ of the movie was. Although everyone was so different they all faced such drastic decisions and issues that affected everyone in so many different ways. It wasn’t like one person’s pain was easier to handle than another is that’s like saying Vietnam was harder on those men than on the men that stood for black rights or vice versa, everyone faced these equally hard issues. So it seemed everyone was very emotionally involved. In fact our whole country was very involved in president elections and campaigns against the war, it seemed everyone really cared.
The film is concentrated on Mexican-American nationalism and immigration. In the beginning of the film, the main character sees himself more of an American rather than Mexican. He speaks fluently in English but does not know how to speak or comprehend proper Spanish. This is an example of involuntary language loss. Rudy, the main character, who was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, does not see himself as a white man but does not see himself as a pure Mexican either and is stuck in the in-betweens of both ‘Mexican’ and ‘American’ culture. Because of this, he is not of specific origin or descent but rather a Chicano. A mix between both cultures instead of just one.
I have always believed that all races have their good and bad. Their is never going to be the perfect race. This movie definitely set a powerful message that life is not perfect for any race and that even though people are from different cultures, they are all interconnected somehow. The filmmakers did a great job at showing us that individuals should not be based on first impressions such as skin color or the social status.
