Film Analysis Of Spike Lee's Do The Right Thing

The film Do the Right Thing was directed by Spike Lee and came out in 1989. Not only did Spike Lee direct it, he starred in the film playing the character Mookie. The film addresses racism and police brutality problems in our society, and watching this film 26 years later, one can still relate to these problems today. Do the Right Thing still impacts today, because what happened in the film and what the film addresses still happens today throughout America. Even though times have changed some things haven’t changed as much as we thought it would. The opening credits was a woman dancing very powerfully to the song “Fight the Power.” And this song will be heard throughout the film, as Radio Raheem plays it on his boombox repeatedly. It was mostly on location, as majority of the film was shoot on the street. Also, Sal’s Pizzeria was most likely shoot on location to as, the light that was being poured into the space seemed genuine sunlight and also, one could see the ceiling of the store, if it was done on a set they most likely would not have a ceiling. The staging of the actors, and the way they acted added to the success of the film. Mother Sister, the woman who sat by the window, Da Mayor, the homeless drunk, and the teens who sat on the stairs, were all what people would do on a regular bases. It made the film seem more realistic and relatable to the people that lived there. Spike Lee also presented us the stereotypical black people, and how they would act. Such as walking around with a boombox blasting music, talking loudly or caring deeply about their Jordans. I feel that Spike Lee had actors exaggerate the actions, such as talking very loud, and his camera work aided him by dollying in to the actors face, making it seem like it is up close and personal. Also, one may say that these actors took an internalized approach to to act in this film, and can relate to what is going on in this film. Also, editing and sound played a huge role in creating this film and making it very successful. This film is consist of many short length takes tied to each other to create the whole.
