Movie Review of A Rebel Without A Cause A Rebel Without A Cause is a movie directed at the young adults of the 1950s. Teenager, a new term for young adults, is brought about within this film as a way to describe the character of the young adults. The movie was directed towards the teenagers because of their growing population and use of money for fashion and entertainment. However, within this movie, some of the most important understandings about family life during the decade are manifested. The issues of teenagers erupt because of family and school life, and as a result, the teens took drastic actions. The use of tobacco cigarettes and dangerous car races are two of the evident examples within the film. This movie focused on teenagers and family life because the ideal image of the 1950s family was a perfect family consisting of a mom and dad with two children. Everything with the family appears to be great and full of happiness. The father went to work and provided for the family, while the mother stayed at home and tended to her children and maintaining the home. This thriving period can be described as the golden age of family because the 1950s stereotype of the perfect family life instigated this suspected boom of happiness of the American family. However, A Rebel Without A Cause expresses that the times were not as perfect as they were depicted. Dysfunctional families that led their young adults to rebellion shape the movie. The dysfunctional of the Stark family is evident at the beginning of the film, when Jim appears drunk in the police station. As his family enters, his mother gives him a hard time, as his father is more passive to him and condones his actions. To help young adults face difficulties of the teenage years, they need guidance from a stable family or a model figure that they can trust and receive an honest answer on various matters. This film explains the negative consequences that can occur when teens have no guidance and sense of structure, like the deadly car crash that killed one of the teens and could have taken Jim’s life. Teens cannot be sheltered through their teenage years because it is in their nature to want to be on their own sometimes and have responsibility, but they need the guidance that will keep them from crossing the boundaries into life threatening situations. I believe this film best explains this and why I believe it is one of the most meaningful film’s I have seen.

In basketball, the National Championship game is the dream of every kid that plays basketball in college. NC State’s basketball team wasn’t well known in 1983. Jim Valvano was the coach and he knew he had a great group of kids. When they won the ACC tournament against the great Ralph Sampson and Virginia, people thought that the win was just luck and they probably wouldn’t make last when they got into the tournament. In this film Coppola thoroughly scrutinized the main characters ideas, behavior, and emotions to depict the darkness and the horror of war. His goal was to make the audience part of the horror. He wanted the audience to have a tremendous impact on this film and he succeeded with the perfect use of sound and editing in the ending sequence of his film. I will demonstrate how Coppola exploits a wide array of sound and editing to create suspense, intensity, and anxiety in the sequence to affect the audience’s emotions, using diegetic ambient sound effects, non-diegetic music, voice over and four editing types.

Daniel Gilbert, a professor of psychology at Harvard University, claims that “The belief-transmission game explains why we believe some things about happiness that simply aren’t true” (Gilbert 216). What Gilbert means by this statement is that our whole lives, we accept facts about the beliefs of others who pass them down to us and make them appear true and positive. They want others to think like them and view the world like them because they simply believe their beliefs and views are accurate. Are they really accurate? Probably not, due to the large amount of varying views and beliefs in our world based on religion, family, and values. Therefore individuals seeking happiness and true fulfilment of their expectations need to make their own decisions based on their desires in order to be truly satisfied with their lives. In the modern day era, we find in society a ubiquitous usage of technology that seems to be never ending and forever growing. Included with this notion, the broad subject of surveillance is of course included. Contemporary surveillance, or more specifically technological surveillance, has been described as ambiguous; meaning that it is often misunderstood or open to different interpretations. The representation of surveillance within popular culture has played an impacting role on how we as a society perceive it and this raises certain questions that may reflect back on to society. The 1998 film Enemy Of The State directed by Tony Scott, Starring Will Smith, Gene Hackman and Jon Voight is considered to be a ‘spy-thriller’ blockbuster. Its central themes explore a range of surveillance techniques and equipment and also provides some insights, no matter how realistic or unrealistic they may be, into the real life security organisation; The National Security Agency (NSA). Using this film as an example and analysing how these themes are represented will hopefully allow us to key these ideas back to modern surveillance theories and practices.
