Feminism includes more than ten types feminists. The three significant and standing out groups are Liberal, Radical, and Post-modern. Liberal feminists believe that unless women have the same opportunities and treatment as men, they will not be able to achieve their full potential. Another type is Radical feminists who believe the world would be so much better without men in it. Because they accept heterosexuality, lesbians are dominant in the radical feminism pool. Lastly, Post-modern feminists believe and fight for the equality for all genders not just only female. The movie The World According to Garp is one of the best examples for showing the characteristics of each type of feminists that has been listed above. He shows his sympathy for the Ellen Jamesians when he knows they do that to protest for the girl who got raped; however, he also feels terrible for anyone in the society is willing to mutilate her own tongue. Not only that, at his mother’s funeral, Garp isn’t allowed to come to the funeral because his mother is killed by a man and the Ellen James society decides that no man is allowed to come. He is forced to dress up like a woman and be treated like one if he wants to attend his mother funeral. After that, Garp finally realizes what his mother has been fighting for many years. Throughout the waves of liberal feminism, there is a new characteristic to be associated with the feminist group. In the first waves, it’s white, married, wealthy women who fit the criteria to be a feminist. The first wave begins in 1900 and ends around 1920, during the times of the Suffragettes. This wave began to introduce the inequalities between men and women, especially relating to voting and education. The second wave began to rise in 1950 which introduced reproductive rights, entitlement to sex, marriage, jobs, social lives, and politics. This wave continued to the 1970’s. It’s not until the third wave, which hits in the 1990’s, when inequalities among women are introduced to the feminist movement (FYS Class Notes).
The contribution of the feminist standpoint in IR theory definitely sparks discussion and debate bringing forth new perspectives which demand to be heard and considered from the more ‘orthodox’ IR theories, previously privileged assumptions and preconceived ideas. This grand entry for the feminists was towards the denouement of the Cold War in the 1980’s , Kirkpatrick; influential US ambassador of the UN during that period was noted to have said that she felt like a “mouse in a man’s world”. Is this still the case with women worldwide and particularly in the West? Tickner’s groundbreaking work set the foundation and key to early feminist IR. Whilst simultaneously interrogating the core issues in mainstream IR, particularly in peace and security, contingent on feminist bases for gendered grasp of issues that have defined it. In this essay we will firstly try to identify and comment on the emergence of feminism within IR in the 80’s. Secondly, we will pin-point and analyze which contributions were of the greatest importance, predominantly via Tickner and Keohane. Finally we will look at the impact and importance of the different types of feminist theories and whether or not they have achieved at enriching our understanding of IR theory.
Despite the big gains the movement made in the early twentieth century, including winning the right to vote and pushing for more freedom in how they could dress and act, both of these women’s lives aren’t vastly improved. They’re both trapped in unhappy marriages, they both rely on their looks, charms, and sexuality to get what they want, and neither of them has even a chance of pursuing a fulfilling life through a career.
At the time women did not voice their opinions, but Betty Friedan was one who came out of her comfort zone and stood up for what she believed in for women’s rights. She could not just sit back and not do anything about it. Friedan did not understand why women lived the traditional lifestyle which was to marry a man, have children, and be a homemaker. Women still do this day want all of that, but women either choose to do so later on in life or not at all. Many people might found it wrong to get married or have children later on in life, but it is quite the norm today. If it was not for Betty Friedan speaking up, women would continue to try to be the perfect housewife. It is the norm today to finish college, and then decide to get married and/ or have children. It is good to know that many women can have the opportunity to do and be able to do whatever they want to do, especially to their own bodies. However, Friedan was fortunate enough to have a mother who wanted her to come out of her comfort zone and to be able to be a change in the world. Friedan’s mother was once a reporter until she met Betty’s father and had to end her career so she can be the perfect housewife. Like mother, like daughter, Freidan also took on the same career as her mother after she attended junior high school. Many women were lucky enough to go to college, and Friedan was one of the many women who were able to go. Friedan has changed

Modern young women referred themselves as the “third wave of feminists” and speak on a plethora of issues that does not include gene-rationalism” (Stevenson, Everingham and Robinson 130). Both groups of women were known to be feminist, although they came from different income levels and age ranges. Debates were difficult to decipher in the reason that there were a lot of viewpoints from different perspectives in the world because of age range and income levels. These movies allowed female characters to embody all the contradictions that could make them a woman. They were portrayed as the “femme fatale” and also “mother,” the “seductress” and at the same time the “saint,” (Newsom, 2011). Female characters were multi-faceted during this time and had much more complexity and interesting qualities than in the movies we watch today. Today, only 16% of protagonists in movies are female, and the portrayal of these women is one of sexualization and dependence rather than complexity (Newsom, 2011).
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is a Nigerian author who has received numerous awards and distinctions. Her main argument is that everyone should be a feminist not because of our gender, but because it is what is right. Adichie has been featured in Beyonce’s song, “Flawless”, spreading awareness to the idea of feminism. “We Should All Be Feminists” is a book about her experiences in Nigeria, where men are more powerful than women. The intended audience of the passage is each and every person residing in heavily patriarchal societies. Hesr thesis is “we should all be feminists”.
I believe Garp and Roberta fall into this category of feminism. Garp was Mr. Mom; he cooked, cleaned, and also did house chores. He did not have any problems that Helen was the bread winner. In the movie when Garp and Helen were looking for houses, I noticed that Garp included Helen in the decision making. When Jenny was boarding the helicopter before she was assassinated, Garp tried to tell her that he didn’t need a father; he grew up fine being raised by a woman. Roberta was once a man and not only placed herself in a woman’s shoe and became one. Not only was Roberta once a man, she was also interested in men and not women anymore; she went out on dates with men and told Garp all about it. I did notice that there was a scene that Roberta even talked about wanting to have children and that she should’ve had them when she was a man. Roberta was not disgusted by men like radicals were and she did believe in women equality like a liberal, but she also believed also in equality in all

The role women play in today’s society is a drastic change from the previous role. Women used to be confined to the superiority of the man. Physically, mentally, and emotionally abused, belittled, embarrassed, and silenced. These are just a few examples of the emotion from the isolated treatment of the past.
