Many children build a relationship with their father that is unbreakable but some children don’t build one with their father at all. Family relationships play a big role in the lives of a child. The poems Daddy, The Gift, and Future Connected By all show significant signs of how the father and child relationships are developed. The poems show examples of how the child feels about the father, what kind of role model the father is and if the family is dysfunctional or functional. To start out we will talk about how the child feels about their father. How a child feels about their father can be a big deal breaker to determine how the relationship will end up. Immediately in the beginning of the poem Daddy by Sylvia Plath it is clear that the relationship between the author and her father is not a good one. The author admits “[…] I have lived like a foot [f]or thirty years, poor and white, [b]arely daring to breathe or Achoo.” (Plath 135) she is expressing her fear towards her father and how her rage has built up through her life. Later on it goes to show she married a man exactly like her father, because she was drawn to the familiarity of this man. There is a completely different feel towards the fathers in The Gift and Future Connected By. The child in The Gift shows a gratitude towards his father because he taught him how to gently distract the pain of a splinter with a story that he carried on to later demonstrate on his wife. The author says “I did what a child does when he’s given something to keep. I kissed my father.” (Lee 140) he was not only given relief from his
