“Baseball is ninety percent mental, and the other ten percent is physical”. Athletes are always thinking, making quick decisions, and predicting results. With fans in the stands, those decisions can be affected and those results are not always predicted correctly. Fans can play a key role in sporting events whether it is a high school football game or the NFL Superbowl. Athlete’s sometimes worry too much about how their fans feel rather than focusing on the game. They think about how they will be celebrating after they win or what they will say to the media if they lose. (The Psychology of Sports Fans) Unlike some of the loud sports such as football, basketball, and hockey, golf and tennis are proven to not be mentally tough sports because their games are played in silence. (Gasquet, Richard) The only thing athlete’s can do to prepare themselves for loud, tough situations is practice because statistics show that either way, whether you are apart of the home team or the away team, the distraction of the crowd will affect how you do and how you feel. It takes time to get used to the crowd noise. If it is a field goal attempt from far out, even the support from hometown fans will detract the athlete’s amount of nervousness and performance.
