Kati Yenawine Mr. Mitchell Christian Worship 1 December 2014 The Life of Fanny Crosby Fanny Crosby once said, “When I get to heaven, the first face that will ever gladden my soul will be that of my Savior.” (Crosby). This statement alone sums up the life lived by Fanny Crosby. She was a woman who overcame numerous obstacles, used her talents to glorify God, and lived a faithful life in service to the Lord. Fanny Crosby is a highly esteemed woman who anyone can learn from (Miller). Fanny Crosby was born on March 24, 1820 to a family from a small village Southeast of New York. Only a few more trails, only a few more tears (“Hymn: Safe In the Arms of Jesus”). When Crosby was not song writing, she was working in churches and missions. She would hear things while working in churches that would spur on poems. For example, she had an interaction with a young man who told Crosby that he had promised to meet his mother in heaven. This encounter brought about the hymn, Rescue the Perishing. “Rescue the perishing, care for the dying, snatch them in pity from sin and the grave; weep o’er the erring one, lift up the fallen, Tell them of Jesus the mighty to save.” (“Rescue the Perishing”). One of the most well known pieces by Crosby was Blessed Assurance. A tune composer named Phoebe Palmer Knapp played the melody for Crosby and asked if the melody spoke to her. Crosby immediately began to say, “Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine,” and proceeded to recite the entire first stanza (Crosby, Fanny; S. T. Kimbrough Jr., and Carlton R. Young).
