20th Century Family
In retrospect, all of these changes have produced and changed the “family values” that have been nurtured as a sapling, developed into the tree which has endured the decay of the family structure in America. A historical perspective shows that, rather than dying out, the family is simply evolving and adapting to fit the current economic and social conditions. In many respects, the family has grown stronger than before. As technology advances, infant and child mortality has declined, many parents who could not conceive can now have children through in vitro fertilization or through surrogacy. Mothers rarely die in process of childbirth, children are more likely to have still living grandparents, and fathers have become …show more content…

Over time, the traditional structure has had to adapt to very influential changes, including divorce and the introduction of single-parent families, teenage pregnancy and unwed mothers, and same-sex marriage, and increased interest in adoption. The understanding of the history of the family is distorted by misconceptions and generalizations. Many people continue to believe that a centuries ago times were simpler and ‘The Nuclear Family’ was more stable and secure. The reality is that the American family has been restlessly evolving since the colonial times of Pre-America. “Families are more ethnically, racially, religiously and stylistically diverse than half a generation ago — than even half a year ago.”(New York Times) Is diversity dangerous? It is believed that the diversity is a product of the evolution of the U.S. and which should be embraced as it will naturally overcome the previous idealistics. The diversity in the structure of the American family is another step to the future of the Family tree. As society continues to uphold the values and morals of the previous generation, many branches of the original family tree has continue to maintain their roots in society such as the Nuclear Family. These new branches of the Family tree originated by new morals none of which are the same, and by exploring the most common ones we may help people identify values of personal significance. Overall family is what matters and no matter how much it has evolved and diversified it will continue to be what matters in everyone's life. Do you know what the American Family is? I
