Many humans are usually fascinated by the supernatural in books and movies. Often times people question the difference between that and insanity. An example of this controversy would be in “The Fall of the House of Usher” by Edgar Allen Poe. Since Roderick and Madeline's behavior was very unusual, people debate on whether this behavior is supernatural, or based on the insanity of humans. As it states in the story, no matter what Madeline ate, she would keep on getting skinnier and skinnier. In the text Roderick describes Madeline as “A settled apathy, a gradual wasting away of the person, and frequent although transient affections of a partially cataleptical character, were the unusual diagnosis.” (np) Humans think of this kind of behavior …show more content…

People may say that Roderick was insane and was probably seeing and hearing things, although the narrator hears them too. The fact that she was covered in blood may explain why she might have broken out of her tomb. Since she was very weak, she wouldn’t have been able to break out of her tomb alive or not unless something supernatural happened. In theory, the maid or doctor probably found her and she could have eaten them. This would explain why she was covered and blood and had the energy to come back to life, meanwhile attacking her own brother. When the ran out of the house because he was frightened, the house fell. “Insert quote on the falling of the house” This could symbolize the falling or the end of the family, since they were the last of the usher family. To conclude, proof indicates that Madeline and Roderick were transitioning into becoming vampires. Not only did they act suspicious, or strange, but the frightening house and the spine chilling song that Roderick sang symbolized how and why they got to where they are now. People may ponder over the idea that they could have been insane due to the insest that was going on in the household, but the story goes much deeper into the supernatural world and it gets people thinking of what was really going on in the Usher household.
