Failing School or Struggling Students? Most people say that going to elementary school, middle school, and high school is one of the easiest moments in a person’s life, but for some kids in Georgia the same cannot be said. It’s hard to focus on school when there are other problems on a child’s mind. In the article, “Big Test Ahead for Struggling Ga. Schools,” Andre Jackson addressed both sides the debate of letting the state control failing schools. He creates a strong argument by using pathos to create sympathy for the struggling children but is weakened by the lack of statistics and sources. Overall he gets the point across, that the failing schools aren’t the issue we should be worrying about. According Andre Jackson’s “Big Test Ahead for Struggling Ga. Schools” in Atlanta Journal, there is a debate on whether the state should take control of failing schools in Georgia. It is said to believe that it is better for the children in Georgia when their education is improved. Both sides seem to agree that these schools and the children in them are affected by “the demographics and the family economics”. As said before, Andre Jackson states facts throughout the article but he only states one statistic. Jackson says, “Improving the quality of education provided to roughly 9 of 10 children in Georgia is a necessity,” and this sentence could have been useful to persuade more readers but there was no source which does not make it credible. That would also make the readers question the author’s credibility because they don’t know if any part of the article is true. Another weak part of the article, is that the author rarely shows his opinion in this piece. He says a few things that sides with the Opportunity School District
