What was the Main Idea of the thinkers of The Age of Reason Can you believe that several centuries ago women did not have the right to be educated or that the government forced people to change their own religion? Well it did happen, but some people could not stand this anymore and wanted to change society for the better. This led to The Age of Reason. In the 17th and 18th centuries in Europe during the age of reason the main idea of philosophes was individual freedom which was imperative of their thinking in three areas: government, religion, and gender equality.

People living in this time often referred to it as the “Age of Reason”. Whenever I look at John Locke’s political view, it surprises me that he was able view government the way he did because he grew up in the renaissance. During the renaissance period, people were not interested in protecting property; their focus was on their position on the hierarchical social ladder. So the fact that his political views so closely resemble a premature form of democracy amazes me. John Locke understood that in a government there needs to be sovereign authority but he realized that sovereign authority should not have absolute power. Locke used the arguments that a government is nothing if it is not supported by the power of its citizens. He argued that the citizens of the government were not well represented in the government so it was justified to be overthrown. This is what he thought about the overthrowing of King James of England in 1688. Locke argued that if the people in a country were to dissolve then the government in that country will also dissolve. He saw a country as a big group of people with similar views. He talks about how society decides to act as a whole group. When they split apart is when society becomes different groups and the government then falls. Many colonists were from England and witnessed or knew about the Glorious revolution and felt like they were mistreated the same way the people of England did at that time. One of the most important reasons that the issues involving faith and reason were present during the years that the Enlightenment took place in Europe was because of a group of men known as the philosophes. The philospohes, a word which is french for philosophers, were the thinkers of the Enlightenment Era. Initially, the philosophes were not accepted by the majority of the Europeans, who had already established their own firm beliefs which stemmed from the traditional beliefs of Christian Europe. After the Revolution in the American colonies in 1775, some Europeans began to embrace the new ideas and ways of thinking introduced by the philosophes. The philosophes claimed that they were bringing the light of knowledge to ignorant fellow humans during the age of the Enlightenment.
The Enlightenment period, also known as The Age of Reason, was a period of social, religious, and political revolution throughout the 18th century which changed the thoughts of man during this “awakening” time.
