Ai Weiwei’s Human Flow and Mohsin Hamid’s Exit West both delve into the life of a refugee and show how the similarities between every refugee story. Human Flow follows the refugees in many different places, in hopes of showing that no refugee story is exactly the same as another; however, there are similarities. Exit West, tells the story of Saeed and Nadia, while they use transporting doors, which are appearing everywhere and can take you anywhere, to escape the growing turmoil in their city. Although Exit West and Human Flow both demonstrate how refugees are constantly being stopped by barriers that other humans put up, Human Flow expresses that these obstacles are walls, not just in a physical sense, but also in a mental sense, that are …show more content…

When Refugees are on the move they are sometimes able to encounter new opportunities and find resources that allow them to survive on their own; however, when they are forced to stay in one place these sparse resources and/or opportunities are unavailable. Many times when stuck in one location refugees are required to live without what we consider the basic necessities, such as clean water, medical care, and/or a roof to keep the rain off their heads. For example, in Turkey Ai Weiwei visits one of the many small refugee camps with a doctor, who attempts to provide what medical care he can. The doctor tells Ai Weiwei how bad the refugee's situation is and to exemplify this situation he tells us how the two-month-old baby, who was born in the small camp, still has not had any vaccinations, and will probably not receive any, putting it at risk of many illnesses. This is a very similar medical situation for about 90% of the refugee population in Turkey since only 10% of the estimated refugee population lives inside of camps that receive humanitarian aid. Human Flow also shows that since the governments of Israel and Egypt blocked off Gaza in 2007, 80 percent of Gazans are forced to receive humanitarian aid in order to
