The Existence of Mermaids
Mermaids are extraordinary and beautiful creatures of the sea. Dating back all the way to ancient Rome and Greece, mermaids seem to fascinate people. Both Greek and Roman mythology show this appreciation for humans that live at sea with the roman god, Neptune, and the greek god, Poseidon. Several modern religions, including Hinduism and Candomblé (an Afro-Brazilian belief), worship mermaid goddesses to this day. Mermaids are fascinating creatures of the sea. They stay in the dark depths of the ocean and very rarely come up to the surface making them very hard to see. Due to them living so deep in the waters, their lives remain a total mystery. There are even some people that think they exist. Mermaids aren’t real and there are five reasons to say why they can’t exist. There are people dedicated to prove that they do exist and will go to extraordinary lengths to do so. What exactly is a mermaid? A mermaid is a sea creature with the upper body of a female human and the lower body of a fish. The male version of the mermaid is called a merman. The name comes from ‘mer’ meaning sea. The way human digestive system is set up and the way a fish digestive system is set up is very different. There is no way for those two systems to combine. Mammals digest their food to produce solid waste and urine. Fish on the other hand, their kidneys produce ammonia which the expel through their gills. Basically, they pee through their gills. Humans have large and small intestines, while fish only have one simple intestine. There is no way to combine both of the digestive systems into a single functioning system.
