The Pride In Their Hearts Imagine writing a book. Now that it's finished, the only thing left to do is pick the title. Not as easy as it seems, huh? The author F. Scott Fitzgerald had trouble naming his novel, The Great Gatsby. The theme of the story was really pride, and as such, the title isn't very fitting. Rather, the title should have been called “the pride in their hearts”. I'm the book, there are plenty of examples of pride. There are many small acts and notions of pride among all the characters. For example, on page 84 Gatsby boasts “my house looks well, doesn't it?” As shown, there is small pride for things such as his house. It also shows how the characters are in general proud their wealth and status in society. As the

Pride frequently has terrible results. For example, as a result of Brothers pride, he left Doodle in the storm. Brother did this because he is angry that Doodle failed, and that his dream of having an “ordinary brother” is over. Doodle realizes that he failed his brother, and feels useless. In addition, after being left in the downpour, Doodle dies. At the point when Brother discovers Doodle dead, he thinks it’s his fault that Doodle dies because he pushed him too hard. After this happens, their family feels like they should’ve been more protective and love Doodle more. In conclusion, while pride can have devastating effects, it can also result in fulfillment.
Pride of the narrator teaches a physically deprived little boy Doodle how to walk and gives him the same amenities as every other normal child. The pride of the narrator, "I [he] am going to teach Doodle how to walk" (170). Pride, in this instance, gives the narrator enough courage and vigor to help another human being in a positive way. The world needs more people such as the narrator, who is willing to benefit other's lives in a tenderhearted way, to make another's life better and happier. For example, "It's so pretty, so pretty, pretty, pretty" (170). One's pride can truly take the simple pleasures in life and make someone happy. The narrator does a simple task by taking his brother down to the swamp. By that action, Doodle is enthralled in happiness because he sees something he has never seen before. Having pride can be beneficial in many ways; however, having too much pride can be pernicious.
When thinking about loyalty in the book, The Great Gatsby not much loyalty is shown. It’s like people come around when they need something but when you need a friend, they are nowhere to be found and you don’t exist. A lot of abandonment is shown towards the end of the story, which leads us back to loyalty and what the relationships each character had with Gatsby meant to them. Throughout the story the only loyalty shown was from Gatsby and Nick towards each other and the loyalty Gatsby showed to everyone around him.
When one sees others with more, they feel an inner twinge of envy. Some are unhappy with their achievements because of forces that they could not control, or because they set their goal too high. Often times, people are disappointed by the result of a situation, because it did not become their expectations. It is through these events that cause one to act upon what they feel. There are many things that affect how people see each other. Judging others on their looks, personalities, and lifestyles is as natural as sleeping. A common subject of judgement has always been social class; each class has judged one another for centuries. Looking at another class is like looking into the window of another world that is shrouded in mystery; especially the upper class. The idea of being wealthy is surrounded by a stereotype that life is easy and everything is perfect. F. Scott Fitzgerald teaches in The Great Gatsby that this is not true through three different social classes in the 1920s: old money, new money, and no money. Although status makes life easier it can negatively affect the personalities of people with old money, new money, and no money.
Being prideful can be very easy. It's natural to think that you are superior, and that you can do everything. However, this is not always correct, and sometimes pride can lead to negative effects. These instances are shown vividly through the short stories, “To Build a Fire,” and “The Scarlet Ibis.” In the end of these stories, the main character’s pride caused regret, or even death. An example is when the narrator teaches Doodle to walk and shows the family. The narrator is so proud of what he did that he wanted to continue to make Doodle "more of a person." I think that this pride that the narrator has can cause readers to get angry. It was that pride that caused Doodle to die in the end. The narrator lost his pride when Doodle could not succeed and left him. Doodle died because the narrator ran away and did not help him. If he didn't let his pride get to him then Doodle wouldn't have died.
In the novel, The Great Gatsby, a major idea of the first quieter of the book is arrogance. Arrogance can be seen by many different character flaunting how much money they have or how “great” their life is.
