Have you ever met a bad tempered or aggressively assertive woman? Some may say yes, some may say no, but let me tell you you it is not a pleasant sight. In Shakespeare’s, The taming of the shrew, Kate is the definition of selfishness, aggressive , and rude flatout. Kate is a shrew because of her reputation, actions, and her attitude. Much of what we know about Kate initially comes from what people say about her. For instance, in Act 1, right after Baptista announces that Kate must marry before Bianca may take suitors, Gremio paint our thoughts of her by declaring “she's too rough for me” (1.1.55). Later in the scene Gremio again shows his dislike for Kate by referring her to a “fiend in hell” (88). Kate obviously gives off a bad vibe to Gremio …show more content…

In Act 2, for example, Kate enters dragging Bianca with her hands tied, trying to truth out of her basically. We see that she's overly aggressive, and immature. She seems well motivated by her actions, the manner which she carries herself marks her as a shrew. Also kate shows her aggressive behavior when Hortensio scolds her for her infamous temper to which she replies that if she cared enough about him to bother, she would hit him on the head with a stool. This is nothing more than a defense of her pride, she is being publicly humiliated and she reacts with haughtiness to cover her embarrassment. Kate shows her jealous attitude in early Act 2 when she was dragging Bianca into the room Kate is venting her anger that Bianca should be indulged with suitors while she remains alone. When Baptista enters and comes to Bianca's rescue, we learn what's really underlying Kate's behavior: She's angry at the way Baptista favors her younger sister. She confronts her father, claiming Bianca is his "treasure" and "must have a husband" while she, humiliated, dances "barefoot on her wedding day" and leads "apes in hell" (II.1, 31-36). We know that Kate is a scrapper, ready to enter into a physical brawl rather than risk not getting her way. No matter how justly motivated we may find her actions, the fact she is quick to lash out signals an immature approach to life
