Irony,. an expression where someone says the opposite of what they mean or does something opposite of what was meant to. This word can change or alter the way we as readers see characters or even meanings in a story. When combined with hypocrisy the author of any story can make a book/story like the “Pardoner’s Tale” change drastically. During this time period, if you were to stand out against the government it would be a death sentence. Chaucer used hypocrisy and iron in the “Pardoner Tale” to create allegories to show the faults and failures in his culture and time. While he was telling the prologue before the story started he gave us some background on the Pardoner. The Pardoner is a guy who says he’s a man of the church but just works there for himself. During the preaching, the Pardoner preaches “The love of money is the root of all evil” (Burke). Yet he would make a play in public by using “flatteries and they prevarication”(Chaucer 116 line 725) just so he can make some money and sale the Pardoner claiming that the way people can be killed and go to heaven.this is a symbol of allegory to the people of the church. During the Pardoner we seen men in the beginning how is stupid. The men was so greedy they let it get the best of them and it costed them their lives. The reader can see hypocrisy through the eyes of the Pardoner himself. The Pardoner is a so called man of the lord who has goals to help people of the church get to heaven. He should be a selfless man. But instead he preached jus for his own benefits,stating “ In all my sermon, for it free the self. Out comes the pence,and specifically for myself”(Chaucer 124 line 19-20). In these lines reveals Chaucer concerns that he fill like the people and the church has gone down the same path as the Pardoner went down. Working to fulfill their stupidity and thirst of wealth. While looking at “Pardoner’s Tale” we can see Chaucer effectively use irony and hypocrisy in ways the reader can understand and realized all his allegories for the people of his time.
