I choose courage because he shows it by climbing the mountain. “The fear made him dizzy.” (Sachar, 197) it made him dizzy because he did not know if he would be able to climb the mountain. He also thought that if he failed zero it would be disappointing. He feared that if there was no food or water he would still fail zero. And he had hope and courage that there would be food or water. Sometimes you got to do what you got to do.
An example of courage, as the judgment that something else is more important than fear, is through the character of Kak in B for Buster by Iain Lawrence. In this novel, Kak is characterized as a young, determined boy, desiring to turn himself from a comic book reading boy into a World War II hero. Planning to escape his drunken, abusive father, Kak enlists himself in the Canadian Air Force although he is underage and only sixteen years old. During his first mission, he is becomes frightened of the risk of not coming home alive, but doesn?t show his emotions because of his austere, intrepid crewmen. During this mission, Kak did not have an absence of fear, but he felt that becoming a hero like the ones in his comic book, and accomplishing his dream of fly, was more important than his fear of dying.
Gallantry, according to the Oxford dictionary is: brave or heroic. Robert E. Lee once said, "My heart bleeds at the death of every one of our gallant men." Gallant men often die sacrificing themselves which is tragic. Fighting for your country and standing up for what you believe in are just two examples of what gallantry could be. While an abundance of characters in SE Hinton's The Outsiders (1967) shows gallant traits, Darrel Curtis has portrayed gallantry frequently throughout the novel.
Stanley Yelnats, a boy who has bad luck due to a curse placed on his great- great-grandfather, is sent to Camp Green Lake, a juvenile detention camp, for a crime he did not commit. Stanley and the other boys at the camp are forced to dig large holes in the dirt every day. Stanley eventually realizes that they are digging these holes because the Warden is searching for something. As Stanley continues to dig holes and meet the other boys at the camp, the narrator intertwines three separate stories to reveal why Stanley's family has a curse and what the Warden is looking for.
Everyone is born with some form of courage. The question is, in their lifetime, will they choose to use it and grow from it? People can be courageous in many different situations and through multiple types of courage. Jem and Scout try to protect his father from the mob outside the Jailhouse and they refuse to leave their father alone.Mrs. Dubose tries to die free from her morphine addiction even though she knows that she will die in the process. They all stood what they believe and they refuse to give up or surrender.

To me having courage makes me feel stronger than ever. Courage is one of the things that helped me join NJROTC, and it helps me get through the days. Before I learned what courage was or even used it, I was too shy to even say my name out loud. But when I joined NROTC they helped me break my shyness. 2. Dike (p.77 to 79) Robert Ross shows his perseverance, when he tries to save himself from drowning in the dikes. He fights against Mother Nature, and thinks strategically by pushing himself and not giving up. He was fearful of drowning, mentally motivated himself to get out and avoid dying, and soon eventually breaks free. This shows how strong Robert is when motivated by the will to survive. Although he was fearful, he overcame it and saved himself, since some would just give up. Before entering the war, it was seen that he would run away from his problems (Rowena’s death), but now as he realizes that there is no point of return, he finds a new sense of drive. He shows his willpower, by maintaining an independent, and strong, logical mind when faced with fear, and learns to fight so that was doesn’t get the best of him. “I don’t want to drown, he thought. Please don’t drown. He pushed himself up with his head hanging down,” (Findley 79).
