Ernest Hemingway, an ambulance driver turned novelist, had a recognizable motif when it came to writing, many of his protagonists shared a common set of traits often referred to as the Hemingway hero code. The trait is as follows; a general loss of faith and conventional morality; cut off from the traditional value of home and family; the ability and the desire to do his job well; the belief that no matter how much trouble life gives a person he must never let his suffering show, except for fears; a belief that the world is generally cruel place, and he must demonstrate that men and women can find moments of meaning and happiness despite the cruelty of the world. Henry a Hemingway Hero is his loss in faith and his loss of traditional values of home and family. When Lt. Henry first meets the priest he is polite, but bluntly states that he does not believe in God when the priest asks if he ‘loves’ god. (p72).The only exception to this is near the end of the novel when Henry, hopeless and tired prays to God to protect Catherine, even going as far as to promise to anything God wants (p330). A last the prayer is no use and Henry’s disbelief in faith is furthered. Throughout the novel, Fredric rarely speaks of family, and it is revealed in book five that Henry has ceased communication with his family to the point that he only sends slight drafts (p304). The disconnect from traditional family values if furthered when Henry no longer cares about the unborn child and simply cares for Catherine and her safety (p324). ‘It would not finish it if one side stopped fighting. It would be worse if we stopped fighting.’”(p49) This quote shows how Henry wants to fight and get the war over with. He is forced to become a war criminal when he is threatened to be shot for leaving his troops when in fact he was abandoned (p225), and even after that, he feels guilty for abandoning the war. A clear example of Henry Hiding his pain is in the field hospital, after he has been hit by a trench mortar shell, and refuses to seek treatment when he is suffering from extreme pain (p58) . An example of when Henry’s deepest fear come out is the night of Catherine’s death, where Henry fears that he will lose his everything and his meaning to live, Catherine.
