The Great Gatsby shows us the decline of civilization with the loss of thought for God and religion. God is merely mentioned at all in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, except for the eyes of T.J. Eckleberg on the billboard. This notion suggests that capitalism is above God among the rich and powerful. The rich and powerful are blind to the notion of God and religion. Decline of civilization isn’t just a thought it is also physical objects. Most of the men that are considered “new rich” got their money by illegal means such as Gatsby. He for example got his money by bootlegging alcohol to people behind the government. The Bible considers committing a crime morally wrong which circles us back around to decline of civilization. Decline of civilization is such a big theme in the Great Gatsby because it underlined the actual causes of the 1920’s. A big cause of the 1920’s was racism and white dominance. In The Great Gatsby Tom is a strong believer in these ideas as seen on page twelve and thirteen. Tom says, “The idea is that if the we don’t look out the white race will be-will be utterly submerged.” He says this about the book The Rise of the Colored Empires written by Goddard. In the Great Gatsby we see this happen a lot like with Gatsby and all of his cars. He has a bunch of cars but those cars don’t have feelings for him. On page sixty-four Nick says, “It was a rich cream color, bright and there in it’s monstrous length with triumphant hat-boxes and supper-boxes and tool-boxes, and terraced with a labyrinth of wind-shields that mirrored a dozen suns,” this description is an example of how people see the car but the car doesn’t care what the people think or do with it, thus being
