Artificial Intelligence (AI) is an electronic mind. Movies have portrayed the vision of a computerized entity, most of which had devious intentions towards the human race. These have really no basis in reality when it comes to examples of artificial intelligence.
Many devices, things previously viewed as examples of artificial intelligence, are now viewed as little more than universal advances in technology. These are all examples of artificial intelligence, but now most of the focus is towards robotics. Robots are one of the many artificial intelligence examples, which everyone recognizes. Every day we get closer and closer to building an artificial intelligence. Although it some think that it would be amazing to create an artificial intelligence but it would also be scary to create it. We don't know what they would be capable of. Two examples of why we should be careful and worried of creating this is the book Frankenstein and the movie Blade Runner. Where in one he creates a monster from dead body parts and the other where he create replicants.
Regarding artificial intelligence in fiction, whether it is in books or movies, one of the greatest and most popular examples is the HAL 9000. The fiction character HAL 9000 is a heuristically programmed algorithmic computer and stars in the 1968 classic 2001: A Space Odyssey. In fact, the HAL 9000 just may be the most “true to life” or realistic artificial intelligent computer in all of fiction. Some may argue that this character is a good example of “Strong AI”, or strong artificial intelligence, which refers to the hypothesis that computers can potentially be programmed to be capable of thought due to the idea that the human mind is simply no more than a computational device itself. This fictional character is most certainly an example of “Strong AI” because the character HAL 9000 not only shows signs of self-awareness but also is capable of true reasoning.
Artificial intelligence has come a long way since the first robot. In 1950, Alan Turing of Britain publishes, Computer Machinery and Intelligence. This book was proposed to be the birth of artificial intelligence as we know it. The first robot that presents the usage of artificial intelligence was built in 1969. The purpose of this robot was to try out navigation using basic tools such as cameras and bump sensors (Marshall 371). Since then, we have made a million robots way better than this one and we’re going to continue doing so. While the world advances, so is technology. It’s slowly progressing and become better and more reliable. Artificial intelligence is a certain type of technology that is resourceful to our nation. We are using it in the medical field, it’s been helpful to military forces, and it’s helping our world become a better place.
