How would you like it if someone was controlling your life every day, every hour? In Kurt Vonnegut Jr.’s “Harrison Bergeron” that is exactly what happens. In “Harrison Bergeron,” everyone is equal. No one is smarter, prettier, or more athletic than anyone else. The government is forcing people to wear handicaps (birdshot in a canvas bag padlocked around your neck) or chips in your ears (stopped your thinking), depending on your weaknesses or advantages. This then affects people’s everyday lives in negative ways. A great theme for “Harrison Bergeron” would be never let jealousy get the best of you. Another good theme would be never try and change people. “Harrison Bergeron” illustrates that you should never let jealousy get the best of you. People are allowed to be jealous of others, but you shouldn’t let it affect the way you act. In the story it states, “Diana Moon Glampers loaded the gun again. She aimed it at the musicians and told them they had ten seconds to get their handicaps back on,” helps verify this theme. This evidence proves that the Diana is willing to go as far as killing someone in order to be better than them. She wants to be above everyone else and is inclined to go to great lengths to make sure that happens. George has to live like this everyday and can’t do anything about it. If he tries to simply take off his handicap bag for a minute, Diana Moon Glampers would be willing to kill him over it. The themes in “Harrison Bergeron” give the readers a phenomenal message that could help them in the future. Never let jealousy get the best of you and never try and change people are the most ideal themes for this story.
