Eva Luna is the story of the main character, Eva Luna and the people and events in her life that shape her. Born to a servant in a South American country, Eva lives a varied life, sometimes exciting, sometimes, frightening, however she never lets adversity keep her down. Eva strives to persevere, and in the end, finds the happiness that eludes so many of her acquaintances through the years.
Eva is the daughter of Consuelo, a woman rescued by missionaries in the jungles of South America. Eva is conceived when the gardener for Consuelo's employer is bitten by a snake and Consuelo tries to help. The two wind up making love and when the gardener recovers he leaves. Consuelo is not bitter, having finally known love. Giving birth to her daughter alone in her room, Consuelo is helped in the end by the cook, who becomes Eva Luna's madrina, or godmother. Moving from house to house, Eva meets many people, some who will have only a fleeting impact on her life and some who will be more important in the future. After reaching a breaking point with one employer, Eva flees again, once again meeting up with Huberto. The boy, now a young man, helps Eva, finding he a place to stay and giving her a sense of family for a brief time. Unrest and corruption in the country end things for Eva, who loses her friends and any sense of security. Fate brings Eva to Riad Halabi, a kindly man with a cleft lip who takes Eva to his distant village in the mountains and treats her life family.
Eva flourishes in Agua Santa, helping Riad in his store and caring for his wife, the spoiled Zulema. Learning to read and growing into a young woman, Eva is happy, but witnesses the beginning of the end when Zulema betrays her husband and then falls into depression. Ultima goes to stay with Antonio Marez, a young boy who lives in the llano with his parents, two sister, and three brothers. This is because Ultima is too old to live on her own. Antonio and Ultima grow very close. Antonio helps Ultima cure his uncle Lucas and lift the curse on the Tellez home. Ultima collects herbs from the mountains and uses these to make remedies and medicines. She used remedies and medicines to cure Antonio’s uncle, Lucas.

Doña Margarita is pious woman along with having a great influence over Juan, which is shown above. Juan realizes that his mother is right, if he truly wants to be happy in his marriage he cannot start off with being unholy in his mind, so he must cleanse himself by going to Reconciliation. The children of the matriarch, mainly Juan because of his radical changes during his life, are greatly influenced by their mothers. They have become living embodiments of each of their mothers stand for, which was the real goal of the mothers after all.
In “Confetti Girl”, the narrator disagrees with her father and questions how much he cares about her and in “Tortilla Girl”, the narrator questions if her mother was taking her into account of her new plans. Tension is shown to be caused in the stories “Confetti Girl” and “Tortilla Sun” due to the parent and narrator not having the same point of view. In this story, a young girl named Izzy lives alone with her mother. One day, the mother surprises her by explaining that she is going to Costa Rica to do some research, and that Izzy is going to her grandmother’s house while she is away.
In unique ways for each girl, “home is a prison” and the only way they escape it is through Esperanza (Kalay 123). Esperanza is a symbol of hope as her name foretells. From the beginning Esperanza attracts the girls of the neighborhood to her side. One of the older Latina girls in Esperanza’s life is Alicia. Being a young lady of about 18, Alicia, takes her mother’s place as the one who cooks and cleans. She works hard from sun up to sun down then goes to the university. Alicia symbolized all the young women who worked hard enough in life to one day escape from the poor streets of Chicago. But like many Latina females, Alicia had a difficult life with her father, who abused her as Cisneros suggests. The story begins with Titas birth prematurely when Mama Elena was chopping onions. Tita grows up with Nacha the most dominant figure in her life, and follows Mama Elenas routine of cooking, cleaning and sewing. At every incident she can, Mama Elena criticizes Tita and even beats her if she tries to speak up. One day Tita tells her mother that Pedro wants to come and ask for her hand, but according to the family tradition she cannot marry because she is the youngest daughter. Mama Elena tells Pedro he can marry Rosaura- one of her older daughters, and Pedro agrees to the arrangement just to be closer to his true love- Tita.
Esperanza is the type of person who easily trusts others which makes her susceptible to betrayal. Her naïveté and inexperience is a common recurrence throughout the book as she begins to mature. Esperanza finds a friend in Sally, whose promiscuity often make Esperanza uncomfortable and what ultimately puts her in danger. It is presumed that she gets raped by a group of boys while waiting for Sally at a carnival. Esperanza encounter was not what she had thought it would be. She feels betrayed by how the storybooks and movies depict it (sex) but most importantly she feels betrayed by Sally whom she trusted the most in to come and save her.
Isabel was born on August 2nd in the city of Peru which is located in Peru. Her mother was named Francisca Liona Barros or as close family members knew her Dona Panchita. Her fathers name was Tomas Allende. He was a Chilean diplomat. Her father’s cousin was the President for the country of Chile. With her mother she had a very close relationship and her mother helped her with many situations. In the other Isabel did not have a very close relationship with her father. Her father was a very sexist person and did not treat her with much respect like he did to her brother. After years and years of fighting of fighting and being abused her mom decided to divorce Isabel’s father. After the divorce Isabel’s mom decided to move to Chile taking Isabel and her two other siblings with her. Her family starts to live in Santiago, Chile with her grandpa. It was tough for her to accustom to a new life. She was very young and she had to make new friends, go to a new school and she did not know the city at all in where her Mom grew up. When she married jimmy she became, "free" but her morals and religious beliefs wouldn't let her take the vows of marriage lightly. She was a loving, persistent woman who didn't let her anger eat her alive.
Huberto Naranjo, just like Riad encouraged Eva’s education, but unlike Riad, he did not succeed at said task. Nevertheless, he shaped her differently - he awakened in her something she had never felt with Riad or Kamal. He awakened the deepest sexual desires she held inside her. Previously, Naranjo had always been a hero-like figure to Eva, due to all the times he saved her. When they first met, and she ran away from the “patrona’s” house, she saw him as someone that could protect her in a world unknown to her. In this scenario, Naranjo would be the hero from across the sea that saves her in a moment of despair, when she has nowhere to go. Also, the streets would be the wasteland, and the “madrina” the impotent king that exposes her to the sea monster which would be the “patrona”. That image of Naranjo stuck with Eva throughout her life, after all, he had been her “childhood hero and the protagonist of [her] first amourous fantasies” (Allende, 249). A couple of years after Eva left Agua Santa, Eva was distraught with the memory of Riad Habali and was troubled by her active romantic affection towards him. However, when she reunited with Naranjo, she was swept away by the new feelings that she started to have feelings towards him. In today’s society, there is a considerably high value on motherhood. Mothers teach their kids important aspects of life and typically pass down their own values to their children. It only makes sense emphasize the importance of motherhood. This is not the case in the novel Sula. In the community of The Bottom, motherhood is not highly valued and has a negative connotation which is shown through Eva’s experiences as a mother and is passed down through her family.
The beginning of the novel introduces the reader to Esther O'Malley Robertson as the last of a family of extreme women. She is sitting in her home, remembering a story that her grandmother told her a long time ago. Esther is the first character that the reader is introduced to, but we do not really understand who she is until the end of the story. Esther's main struggle is dealing with her home on Loughbreeze Beach being torn down, and trying to figure out the mysteries of her family's past.
