I am so grateful to have given birth to such a wonderful child like you. You are the perfect fruit of my beautiful marriage. Your father and I coincidentally met in the library during our college days. He was a complete nerd, and I was a average student who liked to have fun. I realized we were in the same class after we bumped into each other. He helped me on homework, and I helped him become more social. Not after long, he used clever jokes that worked on me and we fell in love. After we graduated, we immediately got married and moved in together. Never have I been so happy to have met the love of my life. After a couple of months establishing stable income, and getting our lives together, we decided to have you. I’ve learned a lot of things in life, and I am also writing this letter to tell you to enlighten you on your journey in life. I truly want the best for you, and so i will begin to impart you with the best advice I have for you. My biggest wish is for you to be truly happy with yourself. The foundation of everything begins with the love you have for yourself. From there on, you will be able to create the world around you. You will be able to discover your passions, surround yourself with great people, create your own happiness ,and give back to the world by using your talents. Life will come with both rain and sunshine, so I urge you to take heart and face the obstacles with a smile. When you need help, don’t be afraid to ask for it. Always remember that you’re God’s masterpiece and you will continue to radiate for as long as the sun continues to shine. Darling, I also want to stress the importance of confidence in life. My mother was a complex, multi-faceted person. Many of you here today knew my mother personally, and many of you knew my mother indirectly through one of her family members. You may have known her as a coworker, a friend, or a support person. Of course, all of my mother’s family here today each knew a part of her, a “facet” of her--as a mother, a sister, an aunt, a grandmother, a cousin.
I would like everybody here, especially my wife, to know how lucky and proud I am to be standing here today speaking to you as her husband. She is beautiful, caring, intelligent. charming and (pause) ... What's that?... I can't read your writing darling!
I’m glad we have Maurice, my mother’s younger brother here today. Ella, her older sister, unfortunately couldn’t make it, but I know the news of my mothers death hit her hard. And I know that she prayed with all her will, for my mother.
It is hard to give a eulogy for one’s parent. More than the death of a classmate or sibling, the death of a parent is not only a loss, but also a reminder that we are all following an inevitable path. We are all “Outrunning Our Shadow” as her friend Fred Hill so provocatively titled his book.
There is an old Yiddish proverb, when the heart is full, the eyes overflow. And so it is the case when we try to sum up and honor my mother’s life.
I would like to start my speech today by thanking Richard for his kind words. I am really proud to have become Isia’s husband; ever since the day we met I have been treated as one of the family and this has made our Journey to this day that much smoother! Thank you both for your blessing I promise that I will make you proud and live up to the high expectations I am sure you have! Thank you for everything you have both done in making this day so special if it wasn’t for you I am sure I would still be saving. So far the day has been an amazing experience and I am sure it can only get better.
I want to thank all of my Mother’s friends and family for being here today to celebrate her life and to mourn her death. I’m sure she would be thrilled to see all of you here and I know it would have meant the world to her.

I was sitting at my small desk in my room when I saw my dad had come home from who knows what, wearing a sad face. He came up to my room with a big red rose. Right then I knew what was going on. I never spent a lot of time with family members who I was not close with. I acknowledged their presence, but I never talked a lot to or about them.
I stand before you today to pay my last respects, and to say my final goodbyes, to my father Harry.
Good afternoon, let me just start by saying that the kindness, support, friendship, and love extended to me and my family during this difficult time has really touched my heart- we are sincerely appreciative!
I'd like to talk today about my grandmother, Ruth Smith - about who she was, what she meant to us, and what this day means.
You came into my life and changed me forever. Over the years people have complimented me for being a good mother but I can't take credit for that. You were born good and you were the one who was often teaching me. I believe you are an angel God sent to teach me. You taught me love. You taught me honesty. You taught me how to forgive and how to be strong. You are the strongest person I have ever known and you gave me strength when I was weak. When times were sad and tough I looked to you for strength. You taught me how to be myself. Most of all you taught me about life and how to live.
I have always been told to “stay true to who you are”, regardless of what other people say. It is difficult, however, to do this when there is a feeling of rejection and disapproval following you. Even in this society, people who are seen as “different” are treated differently because they have something unique about them that society does not possess. I have faced this identity struggle in middle school and even through high school because of some of my different cultural beliefs. The struggle to balance being my true self and being someone who is accepted by my respective community has been difficult, but I have learned that sometimes it is okay to sacrifice acceptance to get to a better place in life. By experiencing conformity struggle, I have come to acknowledge that I will be different, but this dissimilarity is providing hope for a better future.
I believe that every person in, in their own unique way, creates a legacy in their lifetime by which others can live long after that person has left us. For those of us who remain, Mildred Johnson has truly created a legacy to uphold and fulfill in our daily lives. I firmly believe that this carrying out is a true honor and responsibility by means of the various facets that Mildred has made her own.
