Three essential values of being a doctor and how you demonstrate them.
The three values that I believe are essential for doctors are empathy, compassion, and confidence. In order for doctors to provide the best care to their patients, the doctor not only has to be able to relate and engage with their patients, but also be confident and thorough with their diagnosis. Without a mutual connection between doctors and patients, the overall care experience, as a result, would suffer. If a mutual relationship is reached, not only would the patient be more comfortable in the presence of the doctor, but also more likely to be more thoroughly while explaining his or her symptoms. From interviewing with patients and learning their history to developing close relationships to the patients during their care, my compassion for my patient's overall care experience and well-being is demonstrated through how I treat the patients I encounter with respect. Especially for the psychiatric inpatients, whom often feel vulnerable, being able to treat them with respect and honesty makes them feel optimistic about their recovery. Working with in-unit psychiatrists, I show confidence by understanding that I would not understand every detail of what is happening. The students with learning disabilities that I worked with were often hard-working, trying to solve each question before asking for help. While they sometimes needed a little encouragement, teaching these students was the most awarding experience I had while being a tutor at Kumon. Being able to support them throughout their lesson plans and seeing them learn and improve their academic skills made me realize my own passion for teaching and being a mentor for others - something that I hope to carry on in my future
“A healthcare provider’s bedside manner encompasses their medical knowledge, personality, and ability to understand the patient and communicate their concern for them.” (Britt). Although some individuals don’t see the importance of communication and emotional connection with patients in the medical field, doctors who have problems properly interacting with their patients will have a lower chance of success in healing them. Doctors receive so much education but are never taught proper bedside manners, which is the way that physicians interact with patients. In order to ensure a patient’s comfort, psychological well-being, and physical health, a physician must truly understand their patient.
I argue that a physician who gets a patient to comply with treatment indirectly, by building a relationship with the patient offers a more humane and compassionate way to aid the sufferer than directly portraying his or her self as an authoritative figure to get the patient to comply. Another distinction I gather from reading the physician and patient relationship as a friendship rather than the physician being strictly an authoritative figure is that in an ideal friendship there is an active role in which both parties are listeners to the other’s concerns. Professionalism is an adherence to a set of values comprising both a formally agreed-upon code of conduct and the informal expectations of colleagues, clients and society. The key values include acting in a patient's interest, responsiveness to the health needs of society, maintaining the highest standards of excellence in the practice of medicine and in the generation and dissemination of knowledge. In addition to medical knowledge and skills, medical professionals should present psychosocial and humanistic qualities such as caring, empathy, humility and compassion, as well as social responsibility and sensitivity to people's culture and beliefs. All these qualities are expected of members of highly trained professions.
Just as you teach your clients how you want to be treated, you should also provide the same respect you are asking them to give you. All relationships are based on give and take, so by clear communication and compromise, patients and clients can build healthy and reciprocal
It was my pleasure to be able to experience children with these disabilities. A day spent at Westgate was aery active one, I always was able to write plenty of notes from my observation. When the English language students were peer mentored with their 4 grade class, they had to write an autobiographical poem. The fourth grade students had to help their first and second grade ELL students write this poem. When the poem is all written out the students will then type up the poem on word and create a PowerPoint. After the poem was finished they would then present the poem in front of the whole class. This activity was pretty challenging for the fourth grade student because they had more reading and writing skills then the first and second graders. Ms. Lewis; the class teacher had to always redirect the ELL students because they did not understand what to do or what some of the questions said on the organizer. The next day I was in I was able to experience working with three students that had learning disabilities in the classroom. The teacher would separate the children in to groups, the learning disability children were paired up with me and they were given different book pages and problems to work on. Since these children were struggling in math I was able to help them comprehend. I was asked plenty of questions on how to do the problems. Usually Ms. Lewis is paired up with these students but today instead of me just observing them she wanted me to be hands on with the students and be able to interact with them. The next day I went I observe the boy with ADHD. It was very interesting to observe him. I was able to see him use assistive technologies to be able to focus. In summary, the common fictive relationships that are created, particularly in the biomedical community, served to different purposes. Maybe the most important one would include the correct learning of the medical profession that ensures the correct treatment of patients in the future. However, it also helps with new discoveries and researches and even as emotional support to the practitioners themselves, because it let them share their passion with individuals that feel it as well, and with whom they can have an intellectual exchange. Therefore, it would permit them obtain new ideas and knowledge that would help them become better and wiser, ending with the improvement of the patients care.
I had been assigned to a 96 year old patient with a diagnosis of failure to cope. Prior to entering the patient’s room I had made a mental assessment through my personal research and verbal report that he was known to be a non-compliant agitated patient. Although the patient was already labeled as a difficult patient I did not allow this to cloud my own personal judgment when meeting with the patient. While providing morning care I began to engage with the patient through conversation and shortly learned that the patient was still grieving the loss of his wife from 9 years ago, they had been married for 65 years. By showing empathy and listening to the patient explain his story I was able to develop a therapeutic relationship with the patient where trust was built and nursing care was provided efficiently. Upon my exit from the Rehab Center, I consider my interaction with the patient who had spin my new world upside down. Thrown completely off guard, I realized two things: sickness can change people into something you, or even they, might not expect, and the second, I don't take things personal. No one wants to be sick or in the hospital by any means, and as a nurse student it is part of my education and professional obligation to hold my anxiety and disappointments of my patient’s odd behavior. Finally I promised to myself to deal with people at their worst, and always have positive attitude toward them and try to heal them back to their best.

I think it is important that I clarify my own values to ensure that my care is client-centered. Self- reflection during care is also fundamental as it makes me aware of my actions and whether they are establishing a therapeutic relationship or doing the opposite.. The physician inquires about how the patient is and begins the process of finding out what is wrong with the patient. The first thing that the doctor does is to put the patient at ease and to make them as comfortable as possible. The physician should begin the conversation with an open – ended question, such as, “How are you feeling”. The physician then encourages the patient to mention all of the ailments that they are experiencing. This is when the physician can learn the most about the patient’s personality and environmental influences. It is important for the doctor to be attentive and take good notes. The doctor explores in great detail the time of the ailments and the severity. The physician inquires about the patient’s past health and any family history that is of relevance. For my observation experience I went to Southern High School in Harwood, MD. Southern High School has a special education department for the students with disabilities. The teacher that I met with for this classroom observation was Ms. West. In the classroom there were at least four assistant teachers that helped Ms. West throughout the school day. The assistant teachers helped Ms. West co- teach the class and were there to help the students if they needed extra help. The school also has a couple of student aides that come in to help the teachers and the students in the classroom. There were at least twelve students in the classroom. The students in the class had many different exceptionalities such as learning disabilities, Down syndrome,
Overall, I must admit that I have been blessed from taking this course. I feel that I have grown throughout the course of the class, where I once stereotyped students with learning disabilities to understanding students with disabilities. Many people judge and classify what they do not understand, and through that ignorance is birthed. I am thankful that I have taken this class as I have become aware of my ignorance and have a deeper understanding and acceptance of those with learning disabilities, inside and outside of the classroom.
