Three essential values of being a doctor and how you demonstrate them.
The three values that I believe are essential for doctors are empathy, compassion, and confidence. In order for doctors to provide the best care to their patients, the doctor not only has to be able to relate and engage with their patients, but also be confident and thorough with their diagnosis. Without a mutual connection between doctors and patients, the overall care experience, as a result, would suffer. If a mutual relationship is reached, not only would the patient be more comfortable in the presence of the doctor, but also more likely to be more thoroughly while explaining his or her symptoms. From interviewing with patients and learning their history to developing close relationships to the patients during their care, my compassion for my patient's overall care experience and well-being is demonstrated through how I treat the patients I encounter with respect. Especially for the psychiatric inpatients, whom often feel vulnerable, being able to treat them with respect and honesty makes them feel optimistic about their recovery. Working with in-unit psychiatrists, I show confidence by understanding that I would not understand every detail of what is happening. The students with learning disabilities that I worked with were often hard-working, trying to solve each question before asking for help. While they sometimes needed a little encouragement, teaching these students was the most awarding experience I had while being a tutor at Kumon. Being able to support them throughout their lesson plans and seeing them learn and improve their academic skills made me realize my own passion for teaching and being a mentor for others - something that I hope to carry on in my future
