According to research children from low-income housing situations are at high risk of academic underachievement. The educational system of universities and colleges in the United States also in most other countries usually gravitates towards students who come from more privileged backgrounds. Since that’s the case, adolescents in poverty are at a higher risk than privileged children when it comes to repeating the same grade, exclusive injurious placements during school hours and not getting their high school diploma. Conditions that hinder children from learning in a safe environment are obstacles for schools in poverty-stricken areas. Children 's success in school is affected drastically by poverty. Community relating status has an effect on achievements, social comfort, and sexual activity. The perception of the community, both in terms of togetherness and safety, is also critical to adolescents. Positive relationships with adults within the community and opportunities for public engagement give adolescents a understanding of importance and help them feel connected to the neighborhood in which they live. Grievously, low income neighborhoods lack decent social and exercise-related resources, such as after-school and youth programs. This infrequency of services has a negative effect on youth growth in the community. Adolescents introduced to violence in the community are related to various behavioral and unconscious outcomes and has been found to be a distraction in school. Adolescent don’t stand alone from their families or households. Problems of poverty and damaged families affect their development and obtaining academic success. Many of high-poverty areas have youth growing up in distressed families, may have undependable living situations, or have parents who themselves are not educated. These situations present more obstacles to an adolescence successful maneuver into adulthood. These young people need additional services and supports to be successful.
