Diabetes is commonly classified as the most rapidly growing chronic disease of the modern generation. Due to the vast number of victims, it is estimated that one out of every five U.S. federal health care dollars is spent upon the treatment of diabetes. There are two different “types” of diabetes, with type 2 diabetes making up about 90% of all cases. There is not one exact cause for diabetes; rather there are multiple risk factors. Typically, the development of type 2 diabetes is onset by both lifestyle and genetics. Lifestyle choices such as lack of exercise, obesity, and a high-sugar diet are commonly associated with diabetes. Also, it is widely accepted that lack of sleep can also contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes. Genetic factors, on the other hand, are out of a person’s control. Being a woman, increasing age, a family history, and a poor nutritional status of a mother during pregnancy are all risk factors. A person with type 2 diabetes either suffers from insulin resistance or does not produce adequate amounts of insulin.
