In the memoir The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, the author's earliest memory is her injury at the age of three, and in this memory she is all but unhappy. Jeannette's childhood was full of inconveniences. The Walls family had a hard time conforming to society and shaping their future life for success. Rex and Rose Mary had different morals than others when it came to raising their children: Brain, Lori, Maureen and of course Jeannette. During her childhood, Jeannette was dealt with hardships, but showed maturity and independence throughout it.
Jeannette still remembers waking up in that hospital, the doctors all around her watching her waking. She was just three years old when the incident happened. During the incident, she had been making hot dogs, when all of a sudden, flames from the stove crawled up her little pink dress and lit her on fire. Her mother's activities were interrupted when she had heard the sharp, painful screams coming from Jeannette. Her mother grabs her and her brother and get a ride to the hospital. Rex and Rose Mary were obviously very different from other parents. They thought their children should be taught from morals and knowledge, and wanted their children to be like them. Rex wanted his children to be tough and entitled to what they needed and not wanted. Even though Jeannette was injured, her parents thought it was a good thing. They thought it was better for their daughter to make her mistakes early so she could learn from her past experiences. Her father even let her play with fire, so that she could overcome her fear of the mighty flame. "Dad appeared alone in the doorway of my room. He told me we were going to check out Rex Walls Style. Dad hurried down the hall with me in his arms. A nurse yelled for us to stop, but dad broke into a run." Pg.

Although there are only a few instances where the Walls did not have a home, the conditions they lived through were horrendous. Jeannette and her siblings cope with their situations in many ways. However as Jeanette and her siblings quickly lose their innocence and are pulled into the reality of life, her idolization of her parents, (especially her father) gradually lessens and she comes to terms with their flawed lifestyle. In the book The Glass Castle, author Jeanette Walls discovers the idea that a conservative education may possibly not always be the best education due to the fact that the Walls children were taught more from the experiences their parents gave them than any regular school or textbook could give them. In this novel readers are able to get an indication of how the parents Rex and Rosemary Walls, choose to educate and give life lessons to their children to see the better side of their daily struggles.
