The Battle of Britain On July 10, 1940, the Battle of Britain began when Germany started their invasion of England by beginning the first of a long series of bombing raids against Great Britain.1 Throughout the next few months the German Luftwaffe and the British Royal Air Force fought entirely in the air over the English Channel and Southern Britain. The turning point of the Battle was when the Germans reduced the intensity of the Blitz after September 15th. In its wrath, it destroyed the British Air Force and aircraft industry of Great Britain.2 Operation Sea Lion enacted by the Germans, a planned invasion of Great Britain in 1940 to break down their powerful army, was eventually cancelled as preparations could not be completed in the timespan that Adolf Hitler had requested nor could it affect the powers needed to make his army superior.3 Overall, the battle ended …show more content…

Hitler’s final offer of a negotiation peace offering to Britain was rejected, which then made him want to invade immediately to prevent the British army from recovering from its defeat in France. A huge assembly of fleets of barges, tug trawlers, and merchant ships begun at Calais and Rotterdam. Finally, in August, Goering launched the Luftwaffe’s campaign to destroy the RAF and win control of English Channel and the air over southern England. This would provide the Germany navy to have maximum protection of its invasion fleet. Several postponements took place throughout September on the grounds as optimal conditions did not exist for Operation Sealion to take place. The operation was never formally cancelled but without air supremacy and command of the sea the project could not go ahead.
