What is Parental Sacrifice? “You will come to know that what appears today to be a sacrifice will prove instead to be the greatest investment that you will ever make.” - Gordon B. Hinckley. In today’s culture, the act of sacrificing is viewed in a negative light. The dictionary definition for sacrifice is described as the destruction or surrender of something for the sake of someone else (Webster, Sacrifice). This view of sacrifice isn't necessarily incorrect, but I think it also depicts the self-centered attitude of people today. Very few people want to make sacrifices for others. The sacrifices made by my mother are ones that I think about often. My mother married my father at age eighteen the summer she graduated high school. Having dreamed of being a doctor for her entire life, she enrolled in her local university with the intention to fulfill that dream. Two years later I was born and she continued to push to towards her goal, making incredible grades all while caring for a baby and husband. However, she decided when I was two that she would drop out of college to take care of me and eventually homeschool. The story doesn't just end there. Several years later she went back to school and earned a degree in Nutrition Science with a seven year old (me), a two year old, and one more on the way. She wrote her final essay in the delivery room of my youngest sister and graduated with a 4.0 GPA, in the top 5% of the country. All of the sacrifices she made and doors she closed led to new goals and opened doors she didn't know existed. Not every parent should drop out of school or make some other major sacrifice, but parent’s must often choose between social events, some designer handbag, or a much needed vacation and the needs of their child. Abraham did end up taking his son to a mountain to sacrifice him, but at the last minute God told Abraham to stop and sacrifice a lamb instead. This event showed that God would come through for Abraham in the end because Abraham’s faith in Him was so great.... ... middle of paper ... ...
Sacrificing is the act of giving up, destroying, permitting injury to, or forgoing something valued for the sake of something having a more pressing claim. In Liberty and Exile by Julia Alvarez a lot of people have to take certain responsibilities which can involve sacrificing.
The only reason humanity is where it is now is because of the ability for humans to know when and where sacrifices must be made. From having to cut off an arm to escape from an avalanche, to having to spend extra time doing homework that would be better spent playing video games, sacrifices have always been made to achieve better and more rewarding goals. There are two kinds of sacrifices that are made. Those that one must make by themself and those that other’s are forced to make in order to achieve that end goal. Once again they won’t always be large ones, maybe just my mom taking a day off of work to take me to a tournament in Minnesota.

The value of sacrifice consists of having a result, accomplishment, satisfaction or relationships from what is sacrificed. Likewise, when working towards a goal there must be sacrifices to be able to accomplish it. Without the willingness to take sacrifice there will be no results. Therefore, it is important to be disposed to leave things that are not of importance or unrelated with the obtention of the goal proposed. For example, if a student wants to enter into a prestigious university he or she must be willing to dedicate her time and effort to obtain good grades, instead of spending time with friends. If the student is willing to sacrifice his or her social life, there will be a result and would likely accomplish their goal. In the end, the value of the sacrifice will be the satisfaction of the student to enter in the University of his or her dreams. In other cases, a sacrifice may imply a different purpose. Such as risking your life for another human bean like Wesley Autrey did when saving a complete stranger from what could have been a fatal incident. After Mr. Autrey saved the young man from the train, he said: “ I did what I felt was right.” In this situation the value of the sacrifice more for Mr. Autrey it means saving a men life along with his family and friends. A common example of human sacrifice in modern day is war. The soldiers who take part in battle give themselves up to defend their nation. In the front lines the soldiers never know when they’ll take their last breath or step. They sacrifices themselves for the better of the country. In The Odyssey, Circe informs Odysseus, before hand, that he will come across a prodigious monster on his voyage. This monster’s name is Scylla and she has six heads and twelve legs. For every one of her heads, she swallows a person off the ship. No ship was ever passed through this dangerous monster without losing at least one man. Overall, six men were sacrificed in order for Odysseus and the rest of the crew to get home safely. But today, human sacrifice is not common whatsoever. The majority of the people do not take practice in any form of human sacrifice. “Religious wars and persecutions are still not at all uncommon in various parts of the world. As the youngest of five children she was often overlooked. The pride of the family often overrode the opportunity to receive health care, handouts and a decent chance to become something. My mother spent her childhood in a tiny house with her family and many relatives. She was never given the opportunities to excel in learning and life like my generation has. My grandfather was a carpenter and on that living fed many hungry mouths. But despite this already unfortunate lifestyle my mother maintained good grades and was on a path to overcoming her misfortune.
In the selection, The Ramayana, it is a sacrifice in the ultimate sense. A woman, Kaikeyi, is forced to choose between the man that she married and rules and empire with and they one of the sons they produced. To save her son, she must make the sacrifice of her husband to save the life of their son. This was taken directly from Hinduism and this story is still told to children who practice Hinduism. With the lessons taught individually from each of these stories, children and adults will be able to learn lessons for years to come, as long as these stories are told to the upcoming generation of children.
She also was on the school board at my grade school, was politically active, and was active in our church. Seeing her stand up to error in public situations gave me the strength to do the same. Sadly, I had to fight error in my high school history class. I disputed my religion teacher's position concerning the civil rights movement (just one of many discussions we had that year). But without Mom's example, I would have been silent like the other kids.

Growing up my mom and dad always showed us unconditional love. They shaped us to learn the right from the wrong and the importance of education. They related the troubles we experienced in America theirs in South America and how education primarily is the root to being successful in America. My dad would always say “we never had the opportunities you all have in America so don’t let it slip away”. Besides education, they taught us that money is easier spent then earned so to value a dollar. The upbringing in life that they had was very hard living and all the struggles they experience moving to a new country just to provide a better living environment for their kids. In their country beating your kids was known to put way word kids straight. My brother and I can contest to those beating but it made us into good kids. We didn’t give into the peer pressure of other kids in school and we learned to walk away from trouble instead of fighting. Don’t get me wrong, we weren’t angels but we stayed out of the ways of trouble. I commend my parents for the person I’ve become and the independence they instilled in my life today. I’ve used the knowledge to shape the person I want to be and some day the mother I want to be for my kids. Our parents work hard to get us where we are today. Due to the fact that my parents had lack of education and there English wasn 't that good they wasn’t able to get a job that was more relaxing. Though they work in company only they were able to earn enough to raise all of us. Through nurture, now that I’m older I don’t exactly see all the struggles that my parent had gone through to raise me, but I do see and understand more about the struggles. Their love for us, nothing can compare to it. Seeing what my parents had gone through and how hard they have work inspired me to work hard, go to school get a good job so in the future they can depend on me and just rest.
Many people, as well as myself, believe that a mother’s influence is one of the most important influences that one will ever come in contact with in their lives. A mother’s love, comfort, and support will often help to shape a child and allow them to become the person they need to be later on in life. My mother has had a great influence on my life from day one. I often refer to her as my “rock” because she is definitely a solid foundation in my life. Being that she is a great role model, my mother’s support and presence in my life has allowed me to grow as a person, keep my spirits high through hell and high water, prosper in all that I have done, as well as mold me to be a great person in the future.
