Architecture is more than just a skyscraper. It’s more than just a church. It’s more than just a house. Architecture is really much larger than that. Architect Daniel Libeskind declares, “Architecture is the biggest unwritten document of history”. Architecture has significant purpose and meaning. Architecture is capable of healing physically, economically, environmentally, and emotionally. From the Ancient Egyptian pyramids, to the Ancient Roman Colosseum, architecture is seen in different forms all over the world. As a mechanical engineering student and art admirer, I am extremely interested in the rich history of architecture, as well as modern architecture. One excellent example of the physically healing effects of architecture is architect Michael Murphy’s Rwandan hospital. There was one hospital in Butaro, Rwanda in which the architecture was causing people to fall more physically ill than they had been previously. For example, the hallways were too small and had a poor ventilation systems, causing patients to contract lung diseases such as tuberculosis just by going into the hospital(Murphy). The knowledge of this inhumane environment upset Michael Murphy. He was devastated that this was, and still is, happening to people in places in the world like Rwanda and other poverty-stricken countries. To solve these problems, Murphy had several solutions that improve the ventilation of the new hospital. For instance, Murphy altered the design of the hallways so they were to be located on the outside of the hospital, allowing the hallways to be less susceptible to contamination. Murphy also used natural methods of ventilation in the building, such as designing walls in the rooms that open up sideways so that air can flow throughout the …show more content…

There are projects all across the world to make recycling resources a sustainable and helpful practice. One such project is called Low Income Flood proof Technology(LIFT) houses. There are very few of these houses, but communities are pressuring to build colonies in areas of high flooding such as in Bangladesh. The bases of the houses are composed of 8000 plastic bottles to allow the house to more easily float in times of need such as floods, hurricanes, or tsunamis. Plastic bottles were selected as the building material for the base because they are affordable, sturdy, and are buoyant. Along with its environmental advantages, the LIFT houses are highly affordable, costing only 5000
